Long ago, in China, the Emperor wanted a new way of measuring time. A different sort of New Year.
鈥楲et us name the years after animals!鈥 he said.
The people listening, frowned. 鈥榃hich animals shall we choose?鈥 they asked.
鈥榃e鈥檒l have a swimming race!鈥 said the Emperor. 鈥楾he first twelve animals to swim across the river will have a year named after them.鈥
The animals were excited. 鈥業 would like to be the first to cross the river,鈥 said the Cat. 鈥楾hen I will have year one named after me.鈥
鈥楲et us cross together,鈥 said her friend, the Rat.
鈥楤ut, dear Rat,鈥 said the Cat, 鈥業 am not a good swimmer. I am worried I might drown.鈥
The Rat had a suggestion. 鈥榃e will ride on the back of the Ox,鈥 he said.
The Cat was relieved. 鈥業鈥檓 going to have a sleep,鈥 she said to the Rat. 鈥榃hen the race starts please wake me.鈥
鈥榊ou can rely on me,鈥 said the Rat.
But when the race started the Rat didn鈥檛 wake the Cat. He wanted to win the race himself. He jumped on the Ox鈥檚 back.
The other animals began to get ready. The Tiger, the Horse, the Dog and the Pig could all swim. They looked at the river and shrugged their shoulders.鈥楴o problem at all!鈥 they said.
The Rabbit, the Goat, the Snake, the Monkey and the Rooster, weren鈥檛 so sure.
鈥業 can鈥檛 swim at all,鈥 said the Monkey.
鈥楴either can I,鈥 said the Goat.
鈥業 hate getting my feet wet,鈥 said the Rooster.
The Dragon, who could swim and fly, felt sorry for them. 鈥業鈥檒l help you,鈥 he said. The Dragon cut some pieces of bamboo and made a raft. 鈥楥limb on,鈥 he said to the animals who couldn鈥檛 swim. 鈥業 will blow you to the other side.鈥
They all got on the raft, except the Rabbit. 鈥業 shall make my own way,鈥 he said.
The Dragon took a deep breath and blew as hard as he could. Flames belched out of his mouth.
鈥榊ou鈥檝e singed my feathers!鈥 screeched the Rooster.
鈥楽orry,鈥 said the Dragon. He blew again. More gently this time. Slowly, the raft began to move.
Further down the river, the Tiger and the Horse waded in. In front of them was the Ox. He was such a strong swimmer he was already halfway across. You could just see the crafty Rat holding on to his horns.
Soon the river was full of animals. The Ox and the Rat were in the lead. The Tiger was next - followed by the Horse. The Dragon had got the hang of just how much air to blow out of his nose and the raft was moving at a steady pace.
Last to start were the Dog and the Pig. The Dog had a juicy bone to celebrate. The Pig was wallowing in some mud.
鈥楬urry up, you two!鈥 said the Rabbit.
鈥榃hat about you?鈥 said the Pig. 鈥榊ou haven鈥檛 started yet.鈥
鈥業 have a plan,鈥 said the Rabbit. 'Rabbits are really good hopping. I am going to hop across!鈥 he said.
鈥榊ou can鈥檛 hop on water,鈥 said the Dog.
鈥業 don鈥檛 intend to,鈥 said the Rabbit, and he hopped onto a log that was floating in the river.
The Ox and the Rat were nearly there. 鈥極ne last push!鈥 shouted the Rat.
鈥業t鈥檚 easy for you,鈥 mumbled the Ox, trying not to get water in his mouth, 鈥榶ou haven鈥檛 done any of the work.鈥
But the Rat wasn鈥檛 listening. Before the Ox had reached the bank, the Rat leapt off his back and landed on the grass.
鈥業 declare myself the winner!鈥 he shouted, punching the air with his tiny fists.
鈥榊ou cheated!鈥 said the Ox crossly, clambering out after him.
鈥業 don鈥檛 care!鈥 said the Rat.
After the Ox came the Tiger. The Rabbit hopping from log to log was next. The animals on the raft were nearly there. The Dragon was still blowing them from behind.
Suddenly, there was a loud neighing sound. The Horse was in trouble. He had been caught in the strong current and was being carried downstream.
鈥業鈥檓 coming!鈥 called the Dragon.
With a beat of his mighty wings he skimmed across the water, lifted up the Horse and landed with him on the river bank.
The swimming race was almost over.
鈥楩irst year in the Chinese calendar goes to the Rat!鈥 announced the Emperor. Nobody cheered. The Rat didn鈥檛 deserve the honour given to him.
鈥楽econd, is the Year of the Ox - and third is the Year of the Tiger!鈥
The Emperor continued. 鈥楾hen we have - the Year of the Rabbit 鈥 the Year of the Dragon 鈥 the Year of the Snake 鈥 the Year of the Horse 鈥 the Year of the Goat 鈥 the Year of the Monkey - and the Year of the Rooster. The Dog and the Pig are eleventh and twelfth. Well done all of you!鈥
That night there was a big celebration. There was dancing and fireworks and good things to eat. But there was one animal who didn鈥檛 join in. When the Cat found out what the Rat had done, she never spoke to him again.
鈥榊ou are no longer my friend!鈥 she said.
And from that day to this, cats and rats remain mortal enemies.
