ANDY TORBET:Welcome to Beyond Bionic on 成人快手 Teach. I'm Andy Torbet, the show's presenter and on every episode I go up against some of nature's best athletes and try and match their super skills.
ANDY TORBET:And here's what happened when I tried to outrun an ostrich.
ANDY TORBET:Let me introduce you to Oscar the ostrich, and his friend.
ANDY TORBET:Ostriches are the biggest birds in the world. They do have wings but they're really small so the ostrich can't fly but that doesn't matter to them because they are built to run really, really fast.
ANDY TORBET:'45 mph fast to be precise. 'So I'm going to have to go beyond bionic 'to stand any chance of beating this speedy sprinter.
ANDY TORBET:'So what have I got to do to sprint like an ostrich and win the race? 'First I'll need to work out how to match its stride length.
ANDY TORBET:'Standing at nearly three metres tall, 'ostriches come equipped with two seriously long legs, 'which are capable of covering a massive five metres 'in a single stride.
ANDY TORBET:'Even the best human sprinters can only manage two metres.
ANDY TORBET:'But that's not all. I'll have to improve the pushing power of my feet.
ANDY TORBET:'Supercharged muscles in the ostriches feet 'mean that when they make contact with the ground 'they can push their bodies upwards and forwards 'with twice the force of a human sprinter.
ANDY TORBET:'All of that adds up to make my feathered friend a fearsome opponent.
ANDY TORBET:'It's time for me to hit the racetrack and test out some tech, 'to try and get me one step ahead of the ostrich, 'and I need some serious thrust.'
JASON KERESTES:So this is the 4MM jetpack, OK?
JASON KERESTES:This is an electric version, which means that there's no flame coming out the back and it can turn on instantly. You want to check it out?
ANDY TORBET:Yeah, yeah, cool!
JASON KERESTES:So this will give you about 20lbs of thrust, so I'm just going to push this button here and it's going to just turn on.
ANDY TORBET:Yeah!
ANDY TORBET:There's a lot of power there!
JASON KERESTES:Oh yeah.
ANDY TORBET:So the important thing is now, can I have a go?
JASON KERESTES:Not yet, I want to see how fast you are without it first.
ANDY TORBET:I thought you might say that.
JASON KERESTES:Go!
ANDY TORBET:'I run the 100m as fast as I can 'to see how much difference the jet pack will make.
ANDY TORBET:'14.32 seconds, I'll take that. 'But will the jetpack make me go any faster?
ANDY TORBET:'It's time to see if it can make a difference to my speed. 'This is it, the moment of truth.
ANDY TORBET:'The force of the jetpack really pushes me along 'and I thunder down the track. 'But have I done enough to beat 14.32 seconds?'
JASON KERESTES:So your total time for running 100m was 10.56 seconds.
ANDY TORBET:That's world-class sprint speeds. 'For a human maybe, 'but an ostrich could run the same distance in half the time.'
ANDY TORBET:To go even faster, I found a piece of technology that's actually designed to mimic the structure of an ostriches leg. And I've heard the inventor is around here somewhere, woah!
ANDY TORBET:'Meet Keahi, 'who's dreamt of running as fast as an ostrich since he was 12 years old. 'He's fascinated by how their legs and feet work. 'So much so, he studied how they run 'and built his very own pair of bionic boots.'
KEAHI SEYMOUR:So the idea behind these boots is they not only make you taller but they also store energy in these large rubber springs at the back. So with each stride you store energy, and then recoils you into the air.
ANDY TORBET:And do you think with these boots, I can run faster than an ostrich?
KEAHI SEYMOUR:Well there's only one way to find out. Let's get you a pair so you can try them on, let's go.
ANDY TORBET:Walking actually doesn't feel that difficult.
KEAHI SEYMOUR:Yeah.
ANDY TORBET:As soon as you start running, it suddenly requires a lot more skill.
ANDY TORBET:You're a lot less stable.
KEAHI SEYMOUR:Absolutely you've got to concentrate on the feeling of when you need to push off so you feel the energy go into the springs and then with each stride you need to know when to do it.
ANDY TORBET:And he's off.
ANDY TORBET:'This is no walk in the park. 'I'm sprinting against the world's fastest bird on two legs 'over 60m of uneven gravel.
ANDY TORBET:'But I'm determined I won't be beaten by my feathered friend. 'It's time to go beyond bionic.'
KEAHI SEYMOUR:Go!
ANDY TORBET:'But as much as I try, 'the ostrich is just too quick and leaves me for dust.'
ANDY TORBET:Well that was a bit embarrassing. This challenge is not over yet. I know the boots can do far better than what I just did, so I've given them back to Keahi, he's the expert, and he can show us what they can really do against our feathered friend.
ANDY TORBET:I'm joining in too as I am. It's a human being, against a human being with technology against wildlife itself.
ANDY TORBET:Okay here we go.
ANDY TORBET:'We're determined to try and beat this super sprinter 'and his top speed of 45 mph. 'Let's hope he's having a really bad day.'
ANDY TORBET:On your marks. Get set. Go!
ANDY TORBET:'It's a good start, but the ostrich gets away fastest. 'But this isn't over.
ANDY TORBET:'Keahi's breaking away from me and catching the ostrich. 'This is going to be close.'
ANDY TORBET:Keahi's a lot faster than I was on those boots, but he still couldn't catch the ostrich. So technology beat the human, but nature still came out on top.
ANDY TORBET:Okay I didn't come close to managing that. But it just goes to show how incredible some of nature's animals really are.
ANDY TORBET:I tried going beyond bionic and using technology to increase my running speed, but I still couldn't match the super skills of the ostrich.
ANDY TORBET:But I had really good fun trying, and remember you can catch more Beyond Bionic on 成人快手 Teach. I'll see you next time.
