How do algorithms work, and how can they be changed?

Have you ever wondered how mean people posting bad things get such a high social media presence?

Social media is like a puppy

When a puppy gets a treat, it thinks "I got a tasty treat!" If I do the same thing again, I鈥檒l get another one!

Social networking sites like treats too, but not the biscuit type.

Their treats are when people share, read or comment on something posted online.

The more reactions, the more money sites make from adverts. It's called professional networking or social media marketing.

Did you know you're being watched?

Yes that's right.

Everytime you search for something online, the internet is piecing together an image of who they think you are and what content you might like to see.

Recently searched for some new running trainers? You'll probably find your social media sites are now full of advertisements for different trainer stores.

This is because of something called an algorithm.

What is an algorithm?

Think of it as a digital footprint working in real time.

An algorithm is a kind of computer program on the world wide web that says "if this happens, do this."

On social or computer networks, algorithms think "if it鈥檚 getting lots of attention, show more of it.

Popular isn't always good!

Unfortunately algorithms can't tell the difference between good and bad.

To them, if it's popular and gets a reaction - it's good right?

If all your friends and family share a story about a singer saying something rude about another singer, your web browser will think this content is popular.

You'll then start to notice similar content appearing across your social media accounts.

Whether or not something is good or bad, if it's popular and gets attention - the algorithms will share it.

How to change the algorithm

Lots! The internet works in many ways.

Here are a few things you can do to help change the algorithm.

  • Don't hate-click! If you know a photo or video is going to annoy you, don't click it
  • Don't share horrible things - that just feeds the monster
  • If you think a post breaks the site's rule, save the ip address and report it
  • Share the good stuff, we need more of this type on social media
  • Always remember that if you see anything that makes you uncomfortable or worried, tell someone you trust.
