Nigel Gleghorn

The former Stoke City player, now 成人快手 Radio Stoke match summariser, Nigel Gleghorn, takes a look back on his long career and talks about the Potters Premier League progress on Sporting Good Times.

Nigel Gleghorn is a Stoke City legend despite playing for them for only four seasons. His place in Potters folklore was cemented by two historic goals in the 1992-93 season in which City were promoted to division 1 as champions.听

Here he talks to Rob Adcock about his career on the pitch, as a non-league manager, and also being being a match summariser for 成人快手 Radio Stoke:-

Champions

Signed from Birmingham City by Lou Macari, the man nicknamed "Foghorn",听 scored the second in a two-nil away at Port Vale, and then struck the winner against Plymouth Argyle at the old Victoria Ground to win the Potters the championship in 1993.

Nigel's now commentating for Radio Stoke

"We played Port Vale five times that season and won both of the league games. Plus we ended up being champions so we had the bragging rights", Gleghorn told 成人快手 Radio Stoke's Sporting Good Times.

"It was always hard fought on the pitch. (Andy) Porter used to get stuck into a few for Vale, and Steve Foley did for us. But then after that it was shake hands, and all go for a drink in the bar. There was no animosity between the lads, we had respect for them as players and as people."

Fireman

It could've been so different for Gleghorn who, back in 1985, was working as a fireman and playing for his home town team in Durham, Seaham Red Star. At 23, Gleghorn could've thought his chance of being a professional had gone, but like a story line from the Roy of the Rovers comic he went from Seaham to the equivalent of the modern-day Premier League in one move.

Highbury

The scene of Nigel's league debut

"I signed for Ipswich in 1985. I was actually on watch for the fire brigade and got a phone call from (Ipswich manager) Bobby Ferguson. I couldn鈥檛 believe it - I thought someone was pulling my leg.

He said can you play against Liverpool next week? It was surreal! Fortunately someone got fit, so I didn鈥檛 have to. I signed in August, worked my notice at the fire brigade - and I made my debut at Highbury (against Arsenal)...."

Macari

Gleghorn went on to have a successful career at Manchester City, Birmingham and Burnley - before becoming a manager at Witton Albion, Nantwich Town, and Newcastle Town. He says he learnt a lot from former Potters boss Lou Macari

"He used to pick the best players, and he used to let you go and play. As a football team, people think Lou Macari - they all kick the ball long. Couldn't be further from the truth, because he signed footballers who could influence games. You can't knock his record."

You can now hear Nigel as part of 成人快手 Radio Stoke's commentary team for Stoke City's games in the Premier League.
