Hanley lights up the Cultural Olympiad

On the weekend of 26-28 September 2008, special events were held in Stoke-on-Trent to celebrate the national launch of the Cultural Olympiad.

The Cultural Olympiad is intended to be, as the founder of the modern Olympic movement Pierre de Coubertin once said, 'a wedding of sport and art'.

So for the next four years until London 2012, cultural projects will be developed around the UK which are inspired by the Olympic spirit.

Every local area will have events听that cover all aspects of arts, culture and heritage - from disability arts, film and theatre through to music heritage and carnivals.

Let there be light

In Stoke-on-Trent four events were set up during the opening weekend of 26-28 September 2008 under the main themes of 'Open Up' and 'Light Up'.

In Hanley, the town hall was lit up with 200 LED lights in the colours of the Olympic flag. Funded by Advantage West Midlands, it's an innovative lighting project for the building that was built in 1869 and designed by Robert Scrivener.

Other local events were about opening up areas of the city not normally seen by the public. The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery hosted 'Hidden Wonders'听 - a chance to discover some of the museum's hidden collections.

Bethesda's Splendours was a tour of the recently-restored chapel while the City Centre Library also put on a behind the scenes tour.
