Gardening - the new face of modern art

Would you believe it? A gardening event was actually a hot spot for talented artists - their paints and brushes... being flowers and shovels! Check out my visit to Tatton Flower Show

On the 23rd July 2008 I visited the annual Royal Horticultural Flower show at Tatton Park in mid-Cheshire.
It was my first time going to a flower show (gardening is not one of my particular interests but I went along to see what the fuss was all about).

On arrival I was astonished at how big the event was; it had a very large setting and even had its own radio station.
It was like going to a musical festival with the headliners as rose bush, cabbage and cactus. I had no idea that so many people would attend.

Artistic elements

I went on the first day of the show and the whole park was covered in large white tents and colourful flower beds. I did not realise that there was so much you could do with flowers.

The actual designs were really artistic; entries came in the form of flower beds, sculptures and even furniture. I see the gardeners as landscape artists; they take into consideration composition, proportion and choice of shapes and patterns.

'Punk鈥檚 Not Dead' was the name of one stand, which was around the theme of Dragon Flies.听 This was where John Tilly was to be found. He was passionate about design: 鈥淚f you got something inside you that indicates that you have got a design talent, just get out there and start designing t-shirts, website, gardens鈥 gradually your skills will get better鈥.

Stoke-on-Trent鈥檚 very own Moorcroft Pottery company were at the event.
I spoke to some of their display's artists. You can listen to what they had to say in the interviews below.

Eric Knowles from TV's 'Antiques Roadshow' had come to the show with a special interest in the Moorcroft garden, and I spoke to him too. To listen to my interview, click on the link below.

The oddest design came from the Welsh College of Horticulture. I spoke to Amanda Ellis a student from the Welsh College.
The theme for their design was an elastic band ball - honestly this was the largest elastic band ball I have ever seen. It was actually made from bamboo canes and chicken wire.

'It makes a change from your day job' was a thought that came to mind when I spoke to Sonya, a student from Reaseheath College in South Cheshire. She worked on its Butterfly Garden design.
Sonya sees gardening as an escape from her everyday job working in an office as a web designer.

Overall, it was a very good day out; it makes a change from all the other entertainment that is available. The weather was excellent, the atmosphere was pleasant.

I would thoroughly recommend the event - even if gardening is not one of your particular interest!
