Staffordshire Blast Diary, 2008

Hi! Welcome to my day to day diary as a Blast arts reporter at 成人快手 Stoke in the summer of 2008. It records the up and downs, and all the hard work I had to put in... Please put in any comments at the bottom of this page

FIRST DAY听 Monday 21st July 2008

My first day at 成人快手 Stoke was very exciting I started at ten o鈥檆lock and spent the best part of the morning developing my ideas with my mentor Mark Stewart. I started searching for the right people to interview by looking for their contact details on the internet. I used official websites to make sure that the information was accurate. I had problems with some of the contact details; some staff had left the position and new recruits are not listed on the websites. I resolved this by calling the organisations press office and they gave me the contact details for the new staff.

I made phone calls and sent emails to the people that I thought were best to interview for my stories for example Stoke council鈥檚 arts development officer. I researched forth coming events within in my local community. It鈥檚 been a good start to my placement. I am planning on getting some lunch and then I am going into Hanley city centre to chase a story on a local barber and see what else I can find. I am feeling very positive and I am looking forward to the rest of the day.

In the afternoon I visited 鈥楥uttin it鈥 barber shop and borrowed 11 photographs from Daley, of hair styles that he has cut in the past. We had a brief chat and made arrangements for an interview further in the week.

I received a reply to an email that I sent in the morning from Stoke council鈥檚 arts development officer; I replied by giving more information on the interview I was looking to do. I then started chasing a story on a local film maker, dance group and a drama group. I spent the last two hours of the day researching stories, events and writing this diary entry. I finished at eight pm sharp very satisfied with the work that I had done and a bit鈥xhausted.

Tuesday 22nd / July/2008

I started at midday, I checked my emails and then l completed a 2 hour 成人快手 health and safety course. I made arrangements with 成人快手 reporter Helen Thomas to go to Tatton Park flower show tomorrow. I am really looking forward to the event it should be fun and a good opportunity to learn from Helen, take photographs and do some interviews of my own. I then got in touch with Roger our tech guy and sorted out some technicalities.

I made sure that everything is in check for tomorrows out door broadcast; camera battery is charged, taken some spare batteries for the flash mic. I then followed up on two of the stories that I am currently chasing and successfully managed to book an interview date with stoke councils arts director for next week. This was a positive response. I am looking forward to the interview.

I then listened to some tracks by a couple of bands that are going to be performing at a forth coming local event I followed this up by researching more information on the band, their promoters and record company. Most off the week seems to be shaping up out quiet well now; I have built a schedule that will keep me occupied for the rest of the week my next goal is to start making a schedule for next week; booking interviews and what ever else I can find. I am planning to spend the rest of the evening going over tomorrow鈥檚 event, researching more information on the event and printing useful stuff like a site map, information on all the exhibitions and times of all the different activities. I am now developing some interview questions.

Wednesday 23/July/2008

What a fantastic start to the day I was up bright and early five in the morning. I made my way down to 成人快手 Stoke for seven and meet up with Helen Thomas 成人快手 Stoke reporter, and then we set of on a mini adventure to Tatton Park for the Royal Horticultural Flower show. On arrival at Tatton Park I was amazed at how big the event was. There were vast numbers of tents and flower beds and I could see last minute preparation being put in place, this meant that all a sudden, I am walking around taking photographs and a 12 foot digger drives past on what would seem to be a foot path. I helped Helen with her interviews and managed to get several interviews of my own.

Thursday 24th/July/2008

I spent most of the day interviewing, literary as soon as I arrived at the station; I collected my kit and went to the Regent theatre to interview a group of teenagers doing a drama production. They have the luxury of being coached by Racheal Rimmer, the regents resident dance choreographer and acting coach Juel Mcleary.

After This I went down to 鈥楥uttin It鈥 Hairdressers on Hope street in Hanley to interview Daley Lungrin, he and has a lot going on their and it is a very popular spot. After The interview with Daley, I went to do my third interview of the day with a group of about 25 talented singers at the Vic Hall as they were rehearsing for a High School Musical performance. The group are part of the Education Out Reach summer scheme running听 at the Regent theatre.

Tuesday 29th/ July/2008

I published my diary and my profile on the blast website. I then prepared for the interview tomorrow with Stoke council's arts development officer.

Wednesday 30th/July/2008

Peta Bueke Stoke Council鈥檚 Arts Development Officer came in today to pay us a visit. She is a very interesting character and she is very passionate about the arts. The interview on public art in Stoke-on-Trent. I managed to get some exclusive information on a project that she is working on that is dedicated to young people. I prepared the photos of statues for the web and I am editing the interviews that I have done.

07/08/08

I spent the day researching stories and looking up forth coming events. I finished late at 9pm. My main agenda was to get the cogs in motion for the following week. I researched information on Stoke Pride festival and Norsaca Carnival.

08/08/08

Another busy day in the office and I am working as hard as usual. I went out to get some lunch, and I saw some really cool dancers at the back of the Regent Theatre practicing a dance routine whilst suspended in the air.听 I had a chat with them and they told me about a fourth coming event called `Game of 2 Arfs鈥. I took some photos and made my contacts.

09/08/08

I made my way into Hanley to go and cover the 鈥楪ame of 2 Arfs鈥 festival. It was a really impressive event with so much happening all over the city centre.听 I shot of videos spoke to the dancers and generally enjoyed the event.

In the evening the Stoke Pride festival was kicking off at the other side of the Hanley. I went there to see what it was all about and shot several videos, then it began to rain heavily but that did not stop the street party. Happy with what I collected I went home on a high note and鈥renched all the way to my socks.

10/08/08

I was really looking forward to Norsac 2008, it was my first time going to the event and I could not wait. I felt like a media recording mobile van. I had a flash mic sticking out my pocket, a handy cam in one hand and stills in the other. It was a fun fuelled event; I took pictures for the gallery and recorded video content for the web.

11/08/08

After a very active weekend I was back in the office, I went through the videos that I collected over the week and I listened to the audio that I recorded. I also went through the photograph and started sorting the photos, picking the best ones.

At the end of the day I went down to dimensions in Burslem to play a six aside football match with the rest of the 成人快手 colleagues. It was a very competitive but I enjoyed my self.

12/08/08

Worked on the Outreach story, preparing the content so that it would be ready to go on the web. I was feeling the strain from the football match...really badly. I got the story written up by the end of the day, I was really proud to see it go on the web and make front page of the station's website, a very rewarding feeling but I was happy with the end result.

13/08/08

With so much content on my hand I really had a lot of work to get on with. I went through all the material that I had and edited it. I worked on the photos making sure that hey were up to standard. By the end of the day the festival stories were all written up and some audio was in the pipeline. The art of hair dressing article was also completed.

My main agenda was to work at a fast pace, I wanted to collect the content and put on the web as soon as possible.

14/08/08

I spent the day editing audio content and going over my articles looking for any errors. The stories were ready to go on the website.

27/08/08

I worked on one of my stories and wrote in my diary. I went on the councils arts section, I found out that a filming for a film called 鈥楽ouled Out鈥 was taking place at the Kings Hall in Stoke-on-Trent on the 28/08/08. I tried to call the organisers but I was going straight to voice mail. I sent an email in disappointment, knowing that I wouldn鈥檛 probably get a reply until the filming date had passed.

28/08/08

I checked my emails hoping that I would get a reply from the producers of the feature film and I didn鈥檛 get the email I was waiting for, regardless of that I went to kings Hall spoke to the project manager and managed to get in.

I collected some exclusive photos, got back to the station, chopped them up and put them on the web in record breaking time. I was really happy with my achievement because one of my personal goals was to research a story and go out and get the material and have it ready in the same day.

29/08/08

I spent the day in the office writing up my Tatton park story and my statues story. I worked really hard and by the end of the day they were both finished.

30/08/2008

I spent the day editing audio interviews for the Tatton Park story that I did. I learnt how to edit videos with Jonathan Furnival. We were working on a piece for an article called article, the 鈥淕ame of 2 Arfs鈥.

02/09/08

I spent the day with John re-editing the video that we were working on the previous day. I felt more confident using the programme second time round. At the end of the day the video package was complete and I really satisfied with the end result.

03/09/08

I edited a piece that I filmed on the 鈥楪ay Pride鈥 festival in Stoke. Unfortunately Jonathan was away today. I am not really confident with video editing; it is not one of my strongest skills, even with two days worth of experience, but I was determined to get a finished piece by the end of the day and I did.

04/09/08

I spent the day in the station going my stories, reading over what I had written and checking that everything is in order. I also prepared for the Blast showcase at the British Film Institute in London. I also edited a video piece on Norsaca Carnival 2008.
