As part of our series on bipolar disorder (manic depression), Helen Thomas finds out more about electro-convulsive therapy (ECT).

Do you remember the scene in the Jack Nicholson film One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, where the character has electric shock therapy??? It's one of those cinema images that really sticks in the mind.

It might surprise you to know that electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) is still going on - as a treatment for severe depression.

Critics say it just impairs people's memory, rather than actually helping their depression - but people who work in it say sometimes it’s the only thing that works.Ìý

Helen Thomas went for a tour at the ECT clinic at the Harplands hospital to see what it's really like - she's shown around by nurses Barbara and Janette…
