Wales flanker Dan Lydiate has agreed a new player-coach contract at Dragons.

Lydiate, who turns 37 this season, will continue to play and has been named among the replacements for their season opener against former club Ospreys on Saturday in Newport.

But the British and Irish Lion will also take over as a tackle area specialist among Dai Flanagan's coaching team.

Flanagan said described the move as a "natural progression" for the player.

鈥淗e鈥檚 a hugely influential individual, on and off the field, who is ready to take the next step in his career," he said.

鈥淗e has a huge amount to offer and has been coaching the squad over the summer, but with current injuries he still has an important role as a player here.鈥

Lydiate is among the most experienced players still performing at regional level having won 72 caps for Wales, including three Six Nations titles and three World Cup campaigns.

He also appeared for the Lions in the series win over Australia in 2013.
