Well, we'll find out about the first part of Tom's gloomy prediction on Tuesday when Scotland are in Vienna.

It's a huge game, no doubt.

A win for Steve Clarke's side would pretty much knock second seeds Austria out of the running. A draw would be decent enough for Scotland too, but Israel are looking pretty good and we've had our recent toils against them.

"Nathan Patterson had a really good game, I wasn’t surprised," adds Scotland head coach Steve Clarke.

"When I put him into the team I knew what he would give us. Nathan gives you energy up and down the line. He can do both sides of the game. He tired a bit in the second half but showed good maturity to hold his position. He’s a big player going forward and now.

"The young boys always get the credit and the headlines, but don’t forget the senior lads.

"John McGinn spent 10 days in his house, working out in the hallway (after testing positive for Covid)."

"You always need the second goal to stop that nervy last five minutes," says Scotland head coach Steve Clarke. "But if you keep clean sheets you win games.

"A bit of composure and the scoreline would’ve looked better. But 1-0 is enough for three points.

"If you’re not creating chances you’re more worried. The fans made the players start the game well. It was fantastic to have them back."

Nathan Patterson can be very happy with his night's work. The Rangers teenager recovered from a shaky first 10 minutes to turn in a great performance full of vim and vigour.

His run and shot set up the only goal for Lyndon Dykes and he was tenacious in the tackle too.

Fellow youngster Billy Gilmour also stood out, although he won't always get that amount of time to spray passes around in the middle of the park.

Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour, guilty of one of the glaring misses, tells Sky Sports: "I have to be more clinical. We had chances to put them to bed.

"We need to make sure we are putting them away and it's not biting us back."

On Wednesday's trip to Austria, the Chelsea man's message is clear.

"We have to go there and win," he says.

Scotland have a real chance to land a knockout blow on the Austrians on Tuesday but the hosts will know it's do-or-die for their chances in Vienna.

Austria shipped five goals tonight and lost by four at home to Denmark, so we should get chances.

Will we be able to take them though?

Israel are in Denmark next.

Israel have found another goal in Haifa, Eran Zahavi, with his second of the evening. That makes it 5-2 with just a few moments of stoppage-time remaining.

Denmark were 1-0 winners in the Faroe Islands.

Scotland deliver a vital three points.

It could have been better. A lot better. But one goal was enough.

Several good chances, really good opportunities, were spurned against a team ranked 175th in the world and there were a couple of nervy moments at the back at the end of the first half.

Now it's on to Austria on Tuesday...

Nathan Patterson feeds David Turnbull, who then slips a neat pass to Ryan Christie. The first touch is great, taking him away from a defender and opening up the goal, then he blazes a shot over the top.
