    Burnley 0-1 Southampton

    Burnley

Burnley midfielder Dale Stephens: "It's not the debut I wanted but we deserved something from the game. There wasn't much in the game and we will build on that second-half performance.

"We want a high-tempo match and you saw that in the second half. I'm enjoying it - I've only trained once and I needed those minutes."

  3. 'We are stretched'published at 22:18 British Summer Time 26 September 2020

    Burnley 0-1 Southampton

    Burnley

Burnley manager Sean Dyche on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Sport: "They had a grip of the game generally in the first half, they didn't open us up but they were sharper. But we dominated the second half. The margins are tight, it's very rare we cruise through games in the Premier League. It could have gone either way.

"We see so many soft penalties, we know our stats are the lowest in the league, it would have been soft [when Chris Wood went down] but they get given.

"We have been very unfortunate with injuries, we are stretched, the players are giving me everything. I've mentioned it for a number of months now, it's down to the chairman and the board to make those decisions."

  4. 'The chairman knows what is required'published at 22:17 British Summer Time 26 September 2020

    Burnley 0-1 Southampton

    Burnley

Burnley boss Sean Dyche talking to Sky Sports:

"Pretty pleased overall. First half not as sharp as we should have been. Second half much stronger.

"We have two experienced defenders on the bench and that is it, we are reliant on what we have. It is a challenge but we will have players back fit.

"I thought the officials were a bit off at times today. Maybe they are trying get sharp like we are trying to do.

"The chairman knows what is required. Action, we need players. It is a challenge though here, it always has been."

James: The best football experience I have ever had was in a bar in Amsterdam, watching England beat Colombia in 2018. England fans on one side of the street. Colombia fans on the other. The atmosphere was electric. No stadium experience has ever come close!

  7. 'Suddenly it looks different'published at 22:10 British Summer Time 26 September 2020

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl: "It wasn't a good start to the season but we have focused our work this week on the defence and it was fantastic to see how much they had invested today.

"In the end we had a very important win for us. We had a non existant pre-season, we couldn't prepare for the first game and we have had no chance to work on anything before this week. Suddenly it looks different, more organised, this is the key to winning."

Messages at 21:43 - spoken like true armchair supporters. Football is NOT a TV show. It's only truly experienced in the ground.

  9. 'We're a dangerous team'published at 22:02 British Summer Time 26 September 2020

    Burnley 0-1 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton striker Danny Ings: "Burnley make it so tough, you have to try and stop as many crosses as you can, we showed great character to win so many balls. With a broken pre-season it's tough to get into your rhythm and hopefully today can be the start of something. The goal showed what we are about, a great move and it went in off my shin.

"As a player I always want to improve and learn. When we do build momentum we are a dangerous team to play."

We should hear from Sean Dyche soon - I imagine his squad depth or lack of will be the main talking point.

Paul: This might be the season we finally see Burnley relegated. Clearly they lack depth in their squad which is bad as it is but even more so when first team isn't firing. If they aren't at their best they won't win games. And their board seem tight with the finances.

It's a reasoned argument. Who am I to judge?

I'd rather have no football on at all than this weird conveyor belt of soulless games but that's just me.

I never said fans weren't important, they add another dimension, but the evidence is there so far that players are playing with more freedom, managers are performing with less pressure and the goals are flying in. Last season I saw a lot of negative tactics and parking the bus, this season in the majority of the matches teams have gone at each other to try and win football matches. If the quality of matches continues once stadiums are full again I will accept I was wrong, but for now this seems an accurate assessment.

Burnley had their keeper in the area and played it short across the box. Madness.

Ralph Hasenhuttl celebrates the win but that was not a classic by any stretch.

Dizz: Is this the Dwight McNeil who was ready for England? He's spent this game trotting around the middle of the pitch offering absolutely nothing down the wing.

Samuel Clarke: I wouldn’t be surprised if these two teams go down at the end of this season, Saints especially have been dismal so far this season.
