  1. Jones and Perry guide Phoenix to second winpublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 15 August 2022

Amy Jones and Ellyse Perry starred as Birmingham Phoenix made it two wins out of two in this year’s Hundred with an eight-wicket win over Trent Rockets.

Jones (44 not out from 32 balls) and Perry (39 not out from 28 balls) put on 78 for the second wicket to guide Phoenix home with nine balls to spare in a low-scoring match at Edgbaston.

Trent Rockets had earlier stumbled to 116-9 from their 100 balls after a mid-innings collapse saw them lose eight wickets for 38 runs.

Phoenix pace bowler Emily Arlott shone with the ball taking 3-19 from her 20 balls, with Sophie Molineux and Georgia Elwiss taking two wickets each.

    Here's what also happened:

    • Nat Sciver (31 from 31 balls) and Elyse Villani (33 from 25) put on 52 for the second wicket for Rockets.
    • But Rockets failed to make the most of that platform as they collapsed from 70-1 to 108-9 with number 10 Kathryn Bryce the only other player to reach double figures.
    • Birmingham Phoenix were smart in the field, taking eight catches including a smart diving take from Gwenan Davies to remove Mignon du Preez for two.
    • Rockets removed openers Sophie Devine and Eve Jones early to reduce Phoenix to 39-2, before Jones and Perry steered them to victory.

    What’s next?

Trent Rockets host defending champions Oval Invincibles at Trent Bridge on Wednesday (15:30 BST).

Birmingham Phoenix are back at Edgbaston on Friday against Northern Superchargers (15:30).

Match hero Amy Jones: "It felt quite difficult and that the run-rate was creeping up. They bowled really well at stages and we struggled to find the boundary but once a couple got through it felt like we were catching up with it.

"It's great to bat with Ellyse Perry. She's got a world of experience and she definitely kept me calm and her big shots at the end were very helpful.

"It was great to see Emily Arlott pick up those wickets. She's been great all year leading into the tournament and it's great to see her have those successes. She was brilliant. A lot of credit to the bowlers for keeping them to that total to chase."

"Our catching was excellent. We had a really good day in the outfield and it was amazing to see the girls take them under pressure.

"With the games coming so fast the momentum is what everyone talks about in tournament cricket. We'll just be looking to win every game and keep that momentum going as long as possible."

Birmingham Phoenix captain Sophie Devine to Sky Sports: "I'm really pleased. I thought the bowlers did a fantastic job. We had a few players who played the Commonwealth Games here - they executed well. Emily Arlott's changes in pace were fantastic.

"I was happy at half-time. I thought 130-140 was par. I thought we bowled exceptionally well especially with the dangerous batting line-up they've got. The fielding was fantastic well - it is the one thing you can control as the team, we want to bring a lot of energy.

"Ellyse [Perry] is such a fantastic athlete. I've played my entire career against her but just to see her and the way she's evolved her game has shown her class is permanent and it is showing through. She managed that run chase, a few players were getting nervous on the sidelines, but she had control of it and that is credit to the player that she is.

"I am super impressed with the group. You don't have much time to learn about the players so you are going off them and them coming to you to have conversations."
