  1. Superchargers chase down in stylepublished at 21:46 British Summer Time 5 August 2022

Northern Superchargers chased down 162 to clinch victory over Manchester Originals with six balls to spare at Old Trafford in the men's Hundred northern derby.

The match had looked set for a tense finish with 30 needed off the final 15 balls, but Harry Brook took 18 runs off spinner Tom Hartley's final set of five, including two big sixes, to get the Superchargers within striking distance.

David Wiese then walloped 10 off Sean Abbott to seal what turned out to be a comfortable win which had been set up by match hero Adam Lyth's 30-ball 51.

    Here's what also happened:

    • Originals skipper Jos Buttler hit his first half-century in The Hundred but having whacked England team-mate Adil Rashid for six he ultimately lost the battle with the spinner after he was bowled for 59 off 41 balls.
    • Tight bowling from Rashid (1-20) and left-arm paceman David Willey (2-24) ensured the Originals never got away despite some power hitting at the end from Andre Russell (29 not out) and 6ft 7in Paul Walter (23).
    • Intelligent shots from Lyth, who used placement rather than power, gave the Superchargers a great platform. Matt Parkinson finished with identical figures to fellow leg-spinner Rashid. But Willey (29) held the innings together before Brook and Wiese finished the job.

    What's next?

The Originals will attempt to bounce back against London Spirit at Lord's next Monday in a fascinating match-up as Buttler pits his wits against Eoin Morgan, the man he succeeded as England white-ball captain. Northern Superchargers host Trent Rockets at Headingley on Tuesday.

    And don't forget...

Tomorrow morning, Nat Sciver will lead England as they take on India in the semi-finals of the Twenty20 at the Commonwealth Games.

Just to be fair to Dre Russ, here is proof that he was doing more than just belly flopping late in the Originals' innings.

He and Paul Walter hit a few monster blows!

Instead - after a few big sixes - it ended like this.

It must be the most unconventional way to score a single we've ever seen in cricket...

Faf du Plessis might have thought the Originals' total was above par but it could have been that much bigger had Adil Rashid not bowled Jos Buttler just as the innings was heading towards a big finish...

Very surprised by the Superchargers, actually. They look a very good outfit and they might be the team to beat this year. I feel like they've got all bases covered. They've still got someone like Wahab Riaz to come back in as well.

They are the team to beat for me.

Northern Superchargers captain Faf du Plessis: "I thought the wicket was a little bit two-paced but we have a long batting line-up and that helps. Everything is difficult with the time you have in The Hundred.

"I thought that last seven or eight balls, especially with the extra fielder in made the bowlers not sure exactly what to do.

"Walking off at the halfway stage, I thought they were 10 runs over par which is why we went harder in the powerplay. Wiese is an experienced campaigner, getting better and better."

Hero of the match Adam Lyth: "We spoke at the halfway point about taking charge of the power play. It was nice to get a few runs and the team to get over the line. In the powerplay the ball came on nicely. It was tricky through the middle but with our batting line-up we knew we could get over the line. Obviously last year wasn't as good as we can be. It's great to get off to a good start."

That was amazing from Harry Brook... and very much an innings built on his leg-side game.

I think the role of the captain in this competition is even more significant. Use of right and left handers, when you bowl spinners. There is more tactics which affect the final result.

Jos Buttler made an eye-catching 59 and there were a few strong cameos from Wayne Madsen, Andre Russell and Paul Walter but, ultimately, they just didn't post a big enough total on a very good batting pitch.

Adam Lyth led the way for the Superchargers in the chase before Harry Brook, David Willey and David Wiese helped them to finish the job.

It shows you how one set of five can shift the momentum of an innings. The Northern Supercharges bowled clinically to their plans and deserved victory overall.

The decision to bowl Tom Hartley when they did was asking for trouble for Manchester Originals. If they had a seamer who could hide the ball it might have played out differently. I think you have to put the percentages in your favour with the short boundary.

    With six balls to spare

A four to seal it for the Superchargers, Wiese chopping the ball away to the boundary.

The game was in the balance for a much of the chase but in the end, the visitors have got over the line with time to spare.

David Wiese has put the Superchargers within striking distance of the win. They are on the charge to victory. One shot away now.

    4 runs needed

Six! That just about does it, swung away imperiously by David Wiese!

  18. Superchargers 152-4published at 8 balls left

    10 runs needed

Another single but nearly a spectacular run out from Jos Buttler as he came haring in from mid-off!

  19. Superchargers 151-4published at 9 balls left

    11 runs needed

Sean Abbott will bowl the next five... Flicked leg-side by David Wiese and it's a good stop by Hartley. Just a single.
