Kevin de Bruyne seemed quite relaxed when he chatted about his future before Manchester City's Champions League encounter with Feyenoord.

De Bruyne has naturally been more concerned about the groin issue he thought was nothing but kept him out for weeks.

Manager Pep Guardiola does not believe the 33-year-old will commit to another season unless he feels capable of making a significant contribution.

Yet a decision will have to be made soon because plans for next season and beyond need to be put in place.

De Bruyne is one of City's highest earners and, when fit, is their most creative force. If he leaves, a replacement will be required - but there will also be room on the wage bill to make the alterations Guardiola will be demanding around a squad that contains a larger than ideal number of over 30s.

Having kept City waiting for a decision on his own future, Guardiola is not in the strongest position to demand clarity from others.

But he needs it. The answer could shape how City look for the next couple of years.
