Wigan Athletic have appointed former England midfielder Tom Huddlestone as a first-team coach.

The 37-year-old lifted the League Cup with Tottenham in 2008 and reached the FA Cup final with Hull City in 2014.

He made 470 Premier League and Championship appearances during his playing career and also won four caps for England between 2009 and 2012.

Huddlestone moved into coaching in 2022, taking a player-coach role with Manchester United's under-21 side where he has spent the last two seasons.

He is a former team-mate of Latics manager Shaun Maloney, the pair having worked together during their time at Hull.

"The last two years have been really educational from a coaching standpoint," Huddlestone told .

"It's given me the ambition as coaching is something I want to do long-term, and I'm grateful to have this opportunity at the beginning of my coaching journey."

Maloney has also added Pakistan Under-20s head coach Shadab Iftikhar to the League One club's backroom staff as another first-team coach alongside Huddlestone.
