Football Association of Wales (FAW) president Steve Williams has resigned with immediate effect.

Williams was suspended in July pending an investigation and has now decided to step down before an independent hearing takes place.

Welsh football's governing body did not disclose the reason for his suspension.

As well as resigning as president, Williams will leave all his other roles at the FAW and will no longer sit on any of its boards.

The 60-year-old will also be unable to stand for any FAW position in the future.

Williams was elected FAW president in 2021 and had a year left on his term.

Before being voted into the position, he had served with the council for more than two decades and sat as vice-president.

As president, Williams oversaw the running of Welsh football at all levels and was involved in the process of sacking Rob Page as manager of the Wales men's team in June.

In a statement, the FAW said: “After further discussions between the parties, Mr Stephen Williams has decided to resign from all of his roles at the FAW.

“The FAW acknowledges the hard work and support provided by Mr Stephen Williams as a football fan and president to Welsh football and its development, both domestically and on an international stage over the last 37 years.”

In a post on social media WIlliams said: "It’s with a very heavy heart that I announce my resignation from the FAW.

"Over the last 37 years I have met some wonderful people and gained lots of life long friends. My thanks go to each and every one of you who work for the good of the game."
