Newport County have signed former Manchester United and Sunderland goalkeeper Jacob Carney.

The 23-year-old has agreed a two-year deal with the move subject to international clearance and Football League approval.

鈥淚鈥檓 really happy to be here," Carney told the Newport website.

鈥淚鈥檝e been speaking to the club for quite a while and now that it鈥檚 all done, I鈥檓 looking forward to getting into pre-season and meeting the lads.

鈥淭he philosophy of the chairman (Huw Jenkins) is how I want to play. It ticked every box for me.鈥

Carney is a product of the Manchester United academy and signed his first professional contract at Old Trafford in May 2020, before spending the second half of the following campaign on loan at Portadown, in Northern Ireland.

After leaving United in 2021, Carney joined Sunderland under then manager Lee Johnson, on a two-year contract.

He played for the Black Cats under-23s last season before joining Spanish club CD Castellon on loan, helping them to promotion from Spain's third tier.

Experienced Nick Townsend established himself as the number one stopper at the League Two club last season and the club released regular deputy Jonny Maxted at the end of the campaign.

Carney continues the flurry of signings made by Newport in the last few days. He becomes the sixth new signing this week.
