Mansfield Town striker Rhys Oates is expected to be out of action for nine months because of a knee injury.

The 29-year-old has not played since having to go off after 20 minutes in their 2-0 New Year's Day away win against Stockport County in League Two.

"It's devastating for Rhys. We miss him every time he is not available," said Stags boss Nigel Clough.

Defender Alfie Kilgour, meanwhile, has agreed a new contract to run to the end of next season.

The 25-year-old has been out of action since rupturing an Achilles tendon against Doncaster Rovers last August.

Despite his absence, Mansfield are currently third in the table and have only been beaten twice in their 26 league games so far.

"Watching the squad play with such bravery, commitment and class has filled me with inspiration," Kilgour told the

"I look forward to being back on the pitch, giving my all for the Stags."

Boss Nigel Clough added: "Alfie is a consummate professional and will continue to do everything possible to give himself the best chance of recovering from his injury.

"We're delighted that he's signed a new deal and are looking forward to seeing Alfie back in pre-season and get him ready for the 2024-25 campaign."
