Derbyshire Police are investigating after a Chesterfield fan allegedly racially abused a Bradford player in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

The incident is said to have happened during a break in play in Saturday's friendly between the sides.

Both clubs, as well as the Football Association, are also investigating.

"We have a zero tolerance approach towards racism or any other form of hate speech, within football and wider community," a police spokesperson said.

"Officers are investigating the circumstances of the incident in which abuse was reportedly directed at City substitutes by a Chesterfield supporter.

"Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact us."

Bradford said their substitutes were subjected to "discriminatory remarks" during the first half.

In a statement given on Saturday, "Stewards and police officers spoke to the fan in question, who denied the accusation and left voluntarily."

They continued: "Witness statements have been taken and, if necessary, appropriate action will be taken."

Bradford chief executive officer Ryan Sparks added: "These events are a reminder of the amount of work that still needs to be done, in order to remove this kind of behaviour from society.

"Our players have our full support, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with them in collective attempts to eradicate all forms of discrimination."
