Inverness Caledonian Thistle replaced Kilmarnock at the Scottish Championship summit thanks to captain Sean Welsh's emphatic winner.

Welsh lit up a tight contest when he crashed a 20-yard shot high past Zach Hemming in the final 20 minutes.

Tommy Wright's men offered little threat as they slipped to a second consecutive 1-0 league loss.

Inverness open a two-point lead over Raith Rovers, who face Arbroath on Saturday, and third-place Kilmarnock.

Billy Dodds' side have recovered from a five-game winless Championship run with successive victories, completing the double over Killie after a 1-0 success at Rugby Park in August.

Inverness CT manager Billy Dodds: "We're absolutely delighted. Hard-fought win, we probably had the better opportunities and a special goal won it.

"We're top, we're very happy, but there's a long way to go."

Kilmarnock manager Tommy Wright: "We didn't start the game well. We had to change the shape as we were miles off it in the first half-hour.

"It's an incredible strike [for the goal] but we've go to look at how the ball got there in the first place. Overall we weren't good enough. We got what we deserved."
