Hibernian progressed to the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals for the fourth successive season after Jamie Murphy's first-half goal secured victory against Dundee.

The Championship side fought hard while containing the hosts for the majority, and had a Alex Jakubiak equaliser ruled out early in the second half.

However, Murphy's neat finish was enough to down James McPake's men.

Hibs will learn their last-eight opponent in Sunday's draw.

After suffering a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Hibs a fortnight ago in the group stage, Dundee knew they had it all to do.

And an uphill task was almost made tougher early in the tie as Jack Hamilton had to deny Kevin Nisbet with a fingertip stop.

Martin Boyle was next to try his luck for Hibs as an attempt on goal from an acute angle came back off a post with Nisbet firing the rebound over.

However, the hosts would break the deadlock just a minute before the break as Nisbet beat off the attentions of Liam Fontaine before slipping the ball into the path of Murphy, who showed electric pace before hammering beyond Hamilton.

Within two minutes of the second half starting, Dundee thought they had drawn level after Jakubiak knocked in from close range after Ashcroft's effort hit the crossbar, only for the assistant to flag for offside.

Osman Sow was introduced by Dundee and the former Hearts striker set up Charlie Adam with an opportunity, but the former Scotland midfielder's strike was wide of goal.

But as hard as Dundee tried the Hibs defence remained solid and the hosts could have extended their advantage in stoppage time as Drey Wright he fired wide when an open goal laid bare.

Hibernian head coach Jack Ross: "I never thought we were in danger defensively. I thought we looked quite secure and maybe we could have made more of our opportunities, but in cup competitions its not easy to progress and for us to get through into the last eight I'm delighted with that."

Dundee manager James McPake: "I'm gutted for my players. They put so much into that game and they didn't get out it what they deserved. There certainly didn't deserve to lose but we did and I'm proud of them. The way they battled and frustrated Hibs, who are a very good side."
