On-loan Celtic striker Jonathan Afolabi earned Dundee their first Scottish Championship points with an early winner at home to Greenock Morton.

Afolabi marked his maiden start with a fine volley from Jordan Marshall's cross in the fifth minute.

But the dominant hosts faded after the break and were almost punished.

Morton - down to 10 after Robbie Muirhead's 77th-minute dismissal for two bookings - twice threatened an equaliser in the closing stages.

Defender Markus Fjortoft headed inches wide and Aidan Nesbitt forced a scrambling close-range save from Calum Ferrie.

James McPake's side, though, held firm to bounce back from their season-opening 6-2 defeat by Hearts, while Morton also have three points from their first two games.

Dundee manager James McPake: "There were loads of positives. The players were hurting after last week, they have a lot of pride and were really down. The important thing was getting the win and it didn't matter how it came, which I very rarely say."

Morton manager David Hopkin: "Dundee's goal was their only bit of quality in the game. I'm disappointed we didn't get a point, anybody who watched the game will probably agree we deserved three."
