Angelino has made 16 appearances for RB Leipzig and scored four goals

Manchester City loanee Angelino scored both goals as RB Leipzig began their Champions League campaign with victory over debutants Istanbul Basaksehir.

The full-back, who is on a season-long loan in Germany, struck twice in the space of four first-half minutes.

His first saw him receive a long ball forward before turning his marker and firing in.

A defensive error then allowed him to pounce and strike a second blow from which the visitors could not recover.

Angelino has now scored four times this season in all competitions, beating his highest tally for a campaign with only six games played of 2020-21.

His contribution has helped RB Leipzig to an unbeaten start to the season, which sees them a point clear of Bayern and Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table and now with the perfect start to their European campaign.

This is Leipzig's third season in the Champions League, with them having reached the semi-finals last year.

It was a disappointing first match in the competition for Istanbul Basaksehir, who won their first Turkish title in 2019-20.

It does not get any easier for them, with last year's Champions League runners-up Paris St-Germain the visitors to the Fatih Terim Stadium in eight days time.

He shoots, he scores

  • Angelino has scored four goals in his last three games in all competitions for RB Leipzig, with Tuesday's brace his first ever Champions League goals (12th appearance).

  • Angelino scored with both of his shots on target - no other player had more than one attempt on target for the German side.

  • RB Leipzig have won back-to-back Champions League home games for the first time.

  • Istanbul Basaksehir's defeat means just one of the six Turkish teams to play in the Champions League has won their first ever game in the competition (D2 L3), with Trabzonspor doing so in September 2011.

  • RB Leipzig have kept a clean sheet in three of their last five Champions League games, having kept just one in their first 12 in the competition.
