Jed Wallace breaks clear to open his account for the season

Millwall withstood Rotherham United pressure as Jed Wallace's strike gave them their first league win of the season.

After a quiet first half, Wallace struck soon after the break, pouncing on Michael Ihiekwe's miskick to run through and round keeper Jamal Blackman before rolling the ball into an empty net.

Wallace had chances to double the lead, sending a low volley wide when in space before firing just over the bar.

But defeat was harsh on the Millers who were denied an equaliser when goalkeeper Bart Bialkowski scrambled across his line to tip Joe Mattock's volley around the post.

The Millers ended last season unbeaten in their last eight league matches on home turf and had the better of a first period low on goal threat.

Chiedozie Ogbene was at the heart of the hosts' best moments, picking out Freddie Ladapo, who scuffed a good chance wide from the edge of the box, while Kieran Sadlier also fired into the side-netting from a tight angle just before the break.

Ihiekwe had been the hero when his stoppage-time header at Wycombe gave Rotherham a winning return to the Championship, but seven days later he was the villain, making a hash of an attempted clearance and allowing Wallace to steal in for the winner.

United brought on Leicester City loanee George Hirst, son of former England international David, for his debut and his goal-bound effort was deflected off target by a Millwall boot as the hosts piled on the pressure.

But Gary Rowett's side once more proved a tough nut to crack on their travels, preserving their unbeaten start to the season and making it just three defeats in their last 17 away matches in all competitions.

Rotherham manager Paul Warne told ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Sheffield he was optimistic for the season ahead:

"The dressing room are disappointed, obviously, but are quite excited by the fact they have gone more than toe-to-toe with, in my opinion, a top-eight team in the Championship.

"Overall I'm really pleased. I know that sounds surreal - sometimes I'm really unhappy when we win - but I'm really happy with the performance and just think the lads deserved more from it."

Millwall boss Gary Rowett:

"We get a little bit of fortune with the goal but Jed (Wallace) nevertheless anticipates it well and takes it well.

"It would have been really easy to crumble in to the pressure. We didn't do enough in an attacking sense to win the game really.

"The only thing that is really important to me is that historically Millwall have not started seasons quickly and what we have done so far is we have started on the front foot with our results."
