Cambridge United 1-0 Port Vale

  • Published

John Askey's first match as Port Vale boss ended in defeat as David Amoo's strike earned Cambridge a 1-0 home win.

Askey was appointed as Neil Aspin's replacement earlier in the week, but he could not prevent a defeat that leaves Vale five points off the bottom of the League Two table.

The U's survived an early scare when Tom Pope latched on to Antony Kay's wayward shot, but saw his point-blank effort saved by Dimitar Mitov before Pope saw a header ruled out for offside.

At the other end, Scott Brown made a superb save to keep out Rushian Hepburn-Murphy's header, but he was helpless to prevent the opener after 19 minutes.

David Amoo cut inside from the right and saw his left-footed shot from outside the box deflect past Brown as Amoo scored for the third successive home game.

Mitov was again called on 12 minutes after the break as he palmed the ball away to his right to deny Luke Hannant, before the same player came within inches of an equaliser with a rasping angled drive that went just off target.

Mitov again preserved Cambridge's victory six minutes from the end, tipping Kay's top corner-bound effort from 30 yards over the bar.
