Northampton Town 2-2 Grimsby Town

  • Published

Grimsby ended their three-game losing run on the road with an entertaining 2-2 League Two draw at Northampton.

The game was only four minutes old when Northampton struck the first blow as Sam Foley flicked on David Buchanan's corner and Andy Williams thumped into the roof of the net.

Kevin van Veen had a shot blocked and Buchanan rifled wide as the Cobblers threatened a second, but Grimsby were level nine minutes before the break thanks to Charles Vernam, who turned in Ben Pringle's cross.

A brilliant save from James McKeown denied Williams a second goal on the stroke of half-time, but Northampton were back in front with 15 minutes to go through Van Veen's superb free-kick.

Again the home side could not hold on though and Grimsby restored parity within five minutes when a catalogue of defensive errors allowed Harry Cardwell to crash home from close range.

The Mariners ended the game a man down after Danny Collins saw red for a professional foul, but they saw out the last few moments to take home a point.
