Scunthorpe United 1-2 Portsmouth

  • Published

League One leaders Portsmouth maintained their impressive away record by grinding out a 2-1 success at Scunthorpe.

The result means Pompey have now won eight of their 10 away matches this term, with two first-half goals in six minutes from Tom Naylor and Gareth Evans proving crucial at Glanford Park.

Though Lee Novak got the home side back in the game on the hour mark, Kenny Jackett's side held on to move four points clear at the top of the table.

Although unable to break the deadlock in the opening half-hour, Portsmouth certainly looked the likelier scorers, with striker Oliver Hawkins twice heading wide from good openings.

They finally made their dominance count in the 34th minute - Naylor turning well in the box to beat keeper Jak Alnwick at his near post after the ball had been headed into the middle from a corner.

Evans made it two not long after, stepping into the penalty area following a good move down the right and lobbing his shot into the far side of the net.

After Novak had drilled home his fourth goal in five matches in the 60th minute, Scunthorpe turned up the pressure.

They went close with a couple of efforts from George Thomas that fizzed past the post, but could not prevent Pompey from adding another three points to their impressive away tally.
