National League side Solihull Moors saw off seventh-tier Hitchin Town's bid to reach the FA Cup second round for the third time with two late goals.

Adi Yussuf converted from the penalty spot for Moors' opener after Jamie Osborne was brought down just inside the box by Noah Chesmain.

Danny Wright doubled the advantage for Tim Flowers' men soon after when he half-volleyed a strike across goal and in at the second attempt when Hitchin failed to clear a corner.

The Canaries' best chance of the game fell to Ezra Forde early in the second half when he got on the end of a through ball, but Solihull keeper Ryan Boot was quickly off his line to make the save at 0-0.

Hitchin centre-back Dan Webb also had a goal-bound header blocked by Solihull's Thomas Kwame from a corner.

Victory for Solihull takes them into the second round for only the second time.

But it took the side in the National League play-off places 72 minutes to break the deadlock against a team two divisions below them.

Wright had an effort from a well-worked Osborne corner cleared off the Hitchin goal line in the first half but their patience eventually paid off.

A capacity crowd at Top Field were unable to get Hitchin, who last reached the second round in 1995, over the line. They will now return to a relegation scrap in the Southern League Premier Central division, where they have won only once all season.
