Durham's Borthwick takes up player-coach role

Durham all-rounder Scott Borthwick has stepped down as captain to take on a new role as player-coach.

Borthwick, 34, who re-joined Durham for a second spell from Surrey in 2021, has signed a new two-year deal.

In a statement Durham said Borthwick will now play "an integral part" in developing players from the professional teams, academy and pathway squads. He will remain available for Durham in all formats until at least the end of the 2026 season.

After coming through the club's academy, Borthwick was a member of the Durham squad that won three County Championships and the one-day trophy, while playing his part in guiding Durham back to Division One in 2023.

鈥淚鈥檓 delighted to be taking on this new role," Borthwick said.

"I鈥檝e been fortunate to achieve so much as a player with this club, from an 11-year-old in the academy to being captain 鈥 so there is nowhere I would rather start my coaching journey than with Durham.

"I鈥檓 looking forward to learning from the talented coaches and staff we have across our teams, whilst training hard and remaining available to play and be the best possible player still.

"Durham has given me so much in my career so far and I can鈥檛 wait to get started on this new chapter."
