The decision to abandon at Chester-le-Street was taken following a 12:00 BST pitch inspection

Two games in the weather-hit opening round of County Championship fixtures were abandoned completely, without any play being possible during the four scheduled days.

Derbyshire's Division Two game with Gloucestershire was the first to go at Derby, before the Durham-Hampshire Division One game at Chester-le-Street.

All four sides take eight points from the respective matches.

The second round of games starts on Friday, and all four are in action.

Durham travel to Edgbaston to face Warwickshire, while Hampshire are due to host Lancashire in Southampton.

Gloucestershire host Yorkshire in Bristol and Derbyshire visit Wales to face Glamorgan in Cardiff.

Other than the lost Covid season of 2020, this week marked was the first time a Championship game at Derby has been abandoned without a ball being bowled since the match against Nottinghamshire was completely washed out in May 1981.
