Xiao-Ying: Sheffield-based guzheng maestro |

Guzheng
is one of the oldest music instruments in the world, dating back
at least 2,500 years.
And
it's alive and well in South Yorkshire thanks to Yam Xiao-Ying.

Yam
Xiao -Ying who lives in Sheffield graduated with merit from the
Beijing Central Conservatory of Music in 1982, and joined the Guangdong
Traditional Instrumental Orchestra in Canton.
She
was twice winner of distinctions for Guzheng solo in the Guangdong
Yancheng Concert Fair of Traditional Instruments Competition.
The Guzheng is a kind of Zither and it has either 18,21 or 23 strings
which are tuned to the pentatonic scale. The Guzheng has over four
octaves. The instrument is increasing in popularity amongst contemporary
musicians.
While
inheriting the techniques of the performing styles of the Northern
and Southern school of Guzheng, she has developed and formed her
own unique performing style.
At
this moment, she is teaching Guzheng at Leeds Chinese Community
Centre.
