Private Conrad Lewis was the 353rd British soldier to be killed whilst serving in Afghanistan with The 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment. He was killed by a Taliban sniper in February, 2011. His family set up a trust in his memory and work with animal charity Nowzad, after a the dog that befriended their son whilst he was serving in Afghanistan was repatriated to England after their son's death. The dog Peg has lived in Warwickshire for ten years. They've since had a veterinary clinic named in memory of their son and have funded training and employment of female veterinary staff and interns. They fear for the safety and future of the staff and are raising funds and awareness to try and repatriate them and the animals that will be left behind. Tony Lewis, Conrad's father, told Vic Minett that it can be as traumatic for the soldiers to leave a dog that’s given you comfort for six months to an uncertain fate and that’s why they want to bring them back.
