What is a podcast?

A podcast is an edited piece of content which can be a complete radio programme, an edited extract or highlights from a programme, or completely unique content with a particular theme made to be subscribed and listened to as a series. Not every radio programme is available as a podcast.

You can listen to or download most podcasts for free on the ��˿�� Sounds app or from the ��˿�� Sounds website on your computer. From our website, you can download many podcasts as MP3 files. You can transfer the MP3 files to a portable device, such as an MP3 player, to listen to on the move. On the ��˿�� Sounds app, podcasts are downloaded directly onto the app, so you can enjoy them at your leisure.

You can also subscribe to receive a podcast, rather like you might subscribe to a magazine and get it delivered each week. This way you will automatically receive the latest episode of your chosen podcast as soon as it's available.

What is My Sounds and how do I use it?

My Sounds is your personal space. It's where you'll find all the radio programmes and podcasts you've added to your 'Subscribed' list and the individual episodes and shows you've added to 'Bookmarks.' On the website, you can also view and manage your 'Continue listening' programmes.

Subscribed

This is where you'll find all the programmes and podcasts you've followed by clicking the 'Subscribe' button. Click or tap through to 'My Sounds' then 'Subscribed' to view all available episodes and listen to the ones you want to hear.

Bookmarks

Bookmarking is for individual episodes or programmes. Found an episode or clip you'd like to listen to later? Bookmark it so you can go back to it when you're ready.

Check the How do I bookmark episodes to listen to later? page for advice on adding and removing bookmarks.

Latest

Your Latest list is where you'll find the most recent episodes of all of the programmes you've subscribed to. It's sorted by initial broadcast date with the most recently broadcast episodes at the top. It's not possible to delete individual episodes from Latest.

Continue Listening

Programmes you've started but haven't finished, or the next new episode of a series you've subscribed to, can be found in Continue Listening. You can view your 'Continue Listening' list on the ��˿�� Sounds website, mobile app or TV app.

You can manage your list on the website or mobile app by selecting 'Manage list' on the right of Continue Listening. On the website, select 'Remove' under any programme you no longer wish to have on your list. On the mobile app, either swipe left on any programme or episode you'd like to clear, or select 'Edit' on the top right and tap the red 'x' next to any episode or programme you want to remove.

Any changes made on the website or app will be reflected on all devices signed into the same account (you may need to pull down to refresh the mobile/tablet app).

Downloads

On the mobile/tablet app, downloaded programmes can be found in 'My Sounds.' For more help with downloading, have a look here: How do I download on the ��˿�� Sounds app?

How do I find podcasts?

Podcasts can be found in the Podcast category on the website, mobile/tablet app or TV app.

On Alexa devices, simply ask "Alexa, ask ��˿�� Sounds to play [name of content]." For more information, have a look here: Podcasts and music mixes on Alexa

On the website, look for the 'Podcasts' menu, next to My Sounds, Music and ��˿��.

On the mobile/tablet app, you'll find 'Podcasts' along the bottom of any page, and on the TV app, you'll see it on menu on the left hand side.

Scroll and explore the ��˿�� Sounds ��˿��page to find the most popular podcasts across the ��˿�� at the moment, as well as more of the best music, radio and podcast content the ��˿�� has to offer.

If you know the title of a specific podcast that you're keen to find, the search function should be useful.

How do I find programmes?

There are a number of ways to find programmes on ��˿�� Sounds.

��˿�� Sounds website

Search
If you know what the programme, station or live stream is called, try searching for it using the search bar in the top right-hand corner. When you're on the Sounds website, the search will say 'Search Sounds' so the results will all be from ��˿�� Sounds.
Schedules
Find the programme you're looking for by searching by date and time of broadcast on the station’s schedule. Head to the Schedules page or click on Schedules > at the top right corner of the ��˿�� Sounds homepage.
Category
Have a look for any type of programme that suits your mood from the Categories menu near the bottom of the homepage. Click 'View all categories' to view all speech and music categories.

��˿�� Sounds app for mobiles and tablets

Search
If you know what the programme, station or live stream is called, try searching for it using the search icon in the bottom right-hand corner. You can also view and select your recent searches.
Schedules
Find the programme you're looking for by searching by date and time of broadcast on the station’s schedule. Tap 'Stations & schedules' on the homepage and choose a station to see its schedule.
Category
Have a look for a spoken word programme, or a music show or mix, using the Categories menu at the bottom of the homepage, or within the search screen.

��˿��page
Our homepage gives access to live streams on both our national and local stations. Just scroll through the 'Listen live' rail at the top. Scrolling down through the homepage will show popular programmes and music mixes, as well as programmes we think you'll enjoy.
Search
If you know what the on-demand programme* is called, try searching for it using the search icon in the menu on the left-hand side:

*The ability to search for live streams and stations will be available on the TV app in the near future.
Category
From the homepage of the TV app, scroll down to find Categories. Scroll across to find the category you're looking for, and choose View all to see all of the categories we have to offer. Categories can also be found within the Search screen.

Music and Podcasts Menus
Use the Music and Podcasts icons on the left-hand menu to find music mixes and podcasts that you'll love. Scroll through either menu to browse recommended and popular content, and use 'View all' when you see it to browse everything we have available in that section. Scroll to the bottom of the Podcasts menu to view all of the podcasts available on the ��˿�� Sounds TV app.

My Sounds

You can also use My Sounds to find on-demand programmes. My Sounds is your personal space in ��˿�� Sounds where you can subscribe to programmes and podcasts you enjoy and bookmark episodes so that you can listen to them later. Looking for live streams? Use the search option on the website or mobile app to find the station or live stream you're looking for (this will be available on the TV app in the near future). For more information on listening live, head to the How do I listen live? page.

On the ��˿�� Sounds website, mobile app and TV app, scroll down the homepage to the Categories section. Tap 'View All,' then head to the Audiobooks category.

The categories can also be found in the search page on the mobile and TV apps.

The ��˿�� Sounds app is an app you can install on your mobile or tablet to enjoy live and on-demand ��˿�� radio, music mixes and podcasts.

It's completely unique to you as it’s designed to learn from your listening habits. You'll have one-tap access to the latest episodes of your favourite ��˿�� podcasts and radio shows as well as music mixes and Sounds exclusives. We'll introduce you to new audio you may have missed from the 80,000 (yes, really!) hours of ��˿�� audio available.

Here’s a quick rundown of what you can do on the ��˿�� Sounds app:

Listen live	Listen live to any of the ��˿��'s network stations as well as our Sounds exclusive live stations, like Radio 1 Dance or Live News, via the dial at the top of the homepage. Tap Stations & Schedules to listen to any of our 40 local radio stations.
Continue listening	Pick up where you left off across your devices with Continue Listening.
Discover new audio	Discover new programmes, podcasts and music mixes through the Recommended for You section. It's constantly refreshed with new content just for you based on your listening.

Term	Meaning
Android	Android is an operating system designed by Google for mobiles, tablets, and other handheld devices.
Bandwidth	Bandwidth measures the amount of data that can transfer through a communications channel over a given period of time.
Beta	A beta application or website is one which is open for testing before it becomes available as the standard version to the public. Providing feedback on beta versions helps developers find out what to fix or improve before making that version standard.
Bitrate	This is the speed at which information in a file is read by hardware. A high bitrate file will contain more detailed data, so it will take longer to be processed.
Browser	The browser is the software on your device that you use to open websites. Examples of browsers are Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer.
Cache	Your browser saves information from websites to help them load more quickly next time you visit them. This information is saved to the cache.
Cookies	A cookie is a piece of data saved on your browser to remember the settings you've saved on websites you've visited.
Device	A device is the piece of equipment you're using to access ��˿�� Sounds. For example, a mobile, computer or tablet.
Download	When you download something, you take it from the internet and save it on your device so that you can listen to it when you're not connected to the internet.
DRM	DRM means Digital Rights Management. It's a way of controlling how different types of files are used.

FAQ	FAQ means Frequently Asked Question.
Hardware	Hardware is what we call the physical components of a piece of technology. For example, a hard drive, mouse, keyboard, monitor, or laptop can all be considered pieces of hardware.
HTML	HTML means HyperText Markup Language. This is a universal type of computer code used for making websites and controlling how they are displayed.

Install / uninstall	Installing means adding a piece of software to your device. For example, you can install the ��˿�� Sounds app onto your mobile. Uninstalling means removing this piece of software from your device.
Internet Service Provider (ISP)	Your internet service provider is who supplies your internet connection.
iOS	iOS is an operating system designed by Apple for their handheld products, for example, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
IP address	Your IP address is what websites use to determine where in the world you are accessing the internet from. IP addresses can be manipulated though, especially if you're using a VPN, so it might not always accurately reflect where you are geographically.

Term	Meaning
Mobile data	Mobile data, also known as 3G or 4G, is a way to access the internet from your mobile or tablet device. Most people will use their mobile data when they don't have access to WiFi. How much data you have access to is usually determined by your mobile network provider.
On demand	An on-demand programme is one that has already been broadcast on the radio and that you can listen to whenever you want -- on demand.
Online / offline	Something can be described as online if it's connected to the internet. If something is offline, it's not connected to the internet. For example, you can listen to programmes online if your device is connected to the internet. When you download a programme, you can listen to it when your device isn't connected to the internet, and is offline.
Operating System (OS)	The operating system is the system your computer, mobile or tablet runs in order to function. The OS enables your device to run applications and perform tasks. It's the interface between you and your computer.
PC	PC means Personal Computer. This is usually a laptop or a desktop computer with a separate hard drive, monitor, mouse and keyboard.
PIN	PIN means Personal Identification Number. We'll ask you for a PIN if you set up a parental guidance lock.
Platform	This is a combination of hardware and software which software can run on. For example, our ��˿�� Sounds software can run on mobiles, tablets and computers, which are all platforms.
Podcast	A podcast is an edited piece of content which can be a complete radio programme, an edited extract or highlights from a programme, or completely unique content with a particular theme made to be subscribed and listened to as a series.
Programme	A programme is a full radio production that you can listen to from beginning to end. It might only have one episode, or it might have several episodes. These episodes could be split into multiple series.

Term	Meaning
Register	Registering means signing up for a service by providing some details, such as your name or email address.
RSS	RSS means Really Simple Syndication. RSS feeds are lists of information taken from a website or service and updated in real-time with any new information added to that website. They allow you to stay updated when something new, like a podcast, becomes available.
Software	Software is what we call the components of technology which are coded into the computer, and not physical. Applications, programs and operating systems which tell the computer what to do are considered software. For example, our ��˿�� Sounds app for mobiles and tablets is a piece of software.
Stream	Streaming is listening to something online. You can stream by finding what you want to listen to on the website or app and simply pressing play.
Subscribe	Subscribing on ��˿�� Sounds means you'll be kept up to date when there are new episodes of that programme or podcast. You won't have to search for new episodes because they'll be added to your Latest list in My Sounds when they're available.
Troubleshooting	Troubleshooting is the process of following some steps to try to figure out what's going wrong if something is broken. You can also try troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem.

U V W X Y Z

Term	Meaning
URL	URL means Uniform Resource Locator and it's another way of referring to a website address. This is what you type into the address bar to go to a website. For example, "www.bbc.co.uk/sounds" is a URL which will take you to the ��˿�� Sounds website.
Username	This is a name which identifies you when you sign in to a service. You can choose it yourself and it doesn't need to be your name.

Where can I find categories on ��˿�� Sounds?

On the ��˿�� Sounds website and ��˿�� Sounds mobile/tablet app, head to the homepage and scroll down. You'll find the Categories grid just above your Bookmarks.

Once you're there, click on View all categories to see our full list of categories on ��˿�� Sounds. From there you can search through several music or speech categories and subcategories.

You can sort categories and subcategories by Popular, Latest or A-Z. If a category is split into subcategories, for example Comedy, just scroll down the list of subcategories to the All Comedy section. Then click View all. From there, you can filter the entire category by Popular, Latest or A-Z.

Using the ��˿�� Sounds TV app?

Head to the ��˿��page and scroll down to find the list of categories. You can select to view all categories on the right hand side.

When in view all, you can choose to Browse all Music or Browse all Speech.
