First Element

First Element

Meet First Element from Radstock and find out about their fearless in-your-face attitude, seething rich lyrics, ethereal acoustics, amd their... erm... haunting banjos - honest!

Who are First Element?

First Element

Claire Cooper on vocals, Rob Clements on guitar, Scott Williams on bass and Jerry Bird on drums.

Where in Somerset are you from?

Radstock

When did you form?

October 2002

How did you get together?

Rob and Scott got together from a previous band. We heard Claire at a jam night. The first drummer withdrew after three years, so we auditioned for a replacement - Jerry joined in November 2005.

How would you describe your music?

First Element

Fast-paced searing covers, fearless in-your-face attitude, seething rich lyrics from Scott/Claire through to ethereal acoustics with haunting banjo... honest.

How did the band gets its name?

Scott wanted Elemental, but it was already taken. He came up with First Element, as the first element of rock could be the best combination of performers.

Who are your musical influences?

Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses, Janis Joplin, Earl Scruggs.

What is your most memorable gig so far?

First Element

A support gig at The Fleece for a band called Doing Time a couple of years ago - 300 people rocked to our covers, and some were singing the lyrics to our originals.

Where would you most like to play?

In Iron Maiden's jumbo jet - 20,000 ft high.

Finally, tell us some interesting facts about yourself

  • Claire is a former boxer
  • Rob has been playing guitar since he was eight years old
  • Scott is a former U19 javelin champion
  • Jerry has supported Stiff Little Fingers

Thanks for a great gig at The Reckless - I was in trouble for not being home on time - it was worth it.

Chas Hinton
If this was the band on the Norton radio this afternoon you were very impressive, you did not sound like a part-time concern at all. Great delivery on a varied selection, a shame with editing but nonetheless darn good material. I hope you all the best of fortune with your career.

fredo
got Endless Black blasting out my window just now and neighbour stopped mowing his lawn to ask who was playing, he didn't believe you were a part time outfit. H e likes Audioslave, Police and Venom among the usual Maiden and Roses and he rated you amongst them, good call neighbour!! keep up the rocking whisky.

Simon
Excellent band will be seeing them again

Entering the venue, you were immediately aware of an atmosphere laden with expectation. First Element were about to begin their set. Opening with a Led Zeppelin number, the large audience were not disappointed. ‘Sweet Child of mine’ went down particularly well and they played everything from Zep to Green Day. By the end of the evening the whole crowd was rocking and the atmosphere was electric. With a voice reminiscent of Grace Slick, the lead singer, Skin, wowed the crowd with her range and power. Great to hear someone who can really sing. Rob on lead guitar is a virtuoso, no doubt about that. Scott, playing a six string bass really set the rhythm and the manic drummer, Jerry, just kept on going when most of us would have died of exhaustion. What a night. The crowd loved it. We didn’t let them off the stage until 11.30. I lost count of the number of ‘encores’. A brilliant band, go see them if you have the chance – and they are local! Check their website - the link's on the right of this page - to get the next gig.

fredo

Fantastic, saw this band by chance at The Reckless Engineer, Bristol late last year. Have taken in 3 of their gigs since and will be taking in more. You must get "Hey Teenager" from the band and play it to your listeners - it will be an instant conversion to Rock for all those pop'idols our there for sure!
