Mary Rand

Athlete Mary Rand was born in Wells in 1940. She won a gold medal in the long jump at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo to become the first British woman to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field.

Viv Richards

Viv Richards is arguably one of the great cricket batsmen. He made his debut for Somerset in 1974, and made 191 first-class appearances in a 13-year career. With Joel Garner and Ian Botham, he was part of the Somerset side in the late 1970s and early 80s.

Julia Sawalha

The star of Press Gang, Absolutely Fabulous, Pride and Prejudice and Jonathan Creek revealed on The Graham Norton Show on 成人快手 TWO in April 2007 that she lives in rural Somerset.

John Stringfellow

John Stringfellow was a tool-maker who flew the world's first powered aeroplane, a ten-foot, steam-driven model, in Chard in 1848.

Joe Strummer

Joe Strummer, the former vocalist with The Clash, lived near Bridgwater and was a supporter of The Engine Room - the multimedia centre on Bridgwater High Street, which opened in 2003. The Strummerville charity, based in Bridgwater, was set up in his name to support young talent in music, art and film.

Tears for Fears

Bath-based duo Tears for Fears were a major pop band of the 80s. Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal scored eight Top 10 hits, three multi-million-selling albums, and won an Ivor Novello in 1986. Their hits include Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Shout, and Sowing the Seeds of Love.

Julien Temple

Responsible for The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, the infamous Sex Pistols mockumentary, musical filmmaker Julien Temple is an avid supporter of local charity Strummerville. Julien Temple is also involved with The Engine Room in Bridgwater and is in the process of making a film about Glastonbury Festival.

Indira Varma

Actress Indira Varma was born in Bath. Her credits include the TV series Rome (with Taunton's James Purefoy), Bride & Prejudice, and the 成人快手's adaptation of The Canterbury Tales, which also starred Bath's Andrew Lincoln.

Evelyn Waugh

Novelist Evelyn Waugh lived in Combe Florey. He had his first literary success with his novel Decline and Fall in 1928. Other works include Vile Bodies, which was adapted into the film Bright Young Things by Stephen Fry in 2003, and Brideshead Revisited.

Sir George Williams

Born in Dulverton in 1821, Sir George Williams was the founder of the YMCA.

Adge Cutler and The Wurzels, renamed The Wurzels after Cutler's death, are synonymous with Somerset. Popular in the 1970s, The Wurzels are famous for such hits as Combine Harvester (Brand New Key), Blackbird and I Am a Cider Drinker. In 2001, the band made a big return to the charts in support of Britain's farmers - they agreed to donate 50p from each sale of the re-release of Combine Harvester (Brand New Key) to a fighting fund for the foot-and-mouth crisis. Today, the band have started to gain a cult following among people who weren't around to hear them the first time around.

Lesley Pearse, prolific best-selling author, still lives in Somerset (near Keynsham).Which unintentionally leads me to Horace Bachelor - with his'Infra Draw System' of 'winning' the pools(Well known to Radio Luxenborg listeners in the 50s/60s).Sarah Parish - a must - who grew up in Yeovil, & who is currently starring in 'Mistresses'. Need I say more ! (Phew)(A J Cook, born in the parish of Wookey in 1888, & one of a very large family, eventually became the Leader of the Miners during the 1926 General Strike - self taught post formal schooling through his unionactivities in S. Wales).This should have course been in the A to P section !Dr Hilary Bullied - GP & part-time archaeologist - who hailed from Midsomer Norton (He worked tirelessly (a)in 'discovering' the Glastonbury Lake Village, & (b) in pressuring for a gradual improvement in the working conditions of miners around the Radstock District.

If you're going to claim Viv Richards, Joe Strummer, and Julien Temple and 'Somerset Celebs' why not include HIM Emperor Haile Selassie who spent his spent his exile years living at Fairfield House in Bath.

Haile Selassie, spent part of his exile from Ethiopia in Somerset, spending weekends in Burnham on Sea, Berrow and Brean with his family.

John Stringfellow
Although not born in Somerset he lived in Chard from the age of 22 and spent the rest of his life there. He set up a business making bobbins for lace machines but in his spare time he experimented in flight in partnership with William Henson, also of Chard. Henson emigrated to America in 1848 but in the same year John Stringfellow succesfully flew a steam-powered model aicraft, the world's first flight by any form of powered flying machine. He also flew a powered triplane at an exhibition in the Crystal Palace in 1868. He died in Chard in 1883 and his memorial is in Chard cemetery. (He and James Gillingham were great friends)

Definately worth the mention. Gave up drugs and alcohol and ran the marathon 5 times for the british legion, then climbed mount everest for action aid. Has had a rough life and i think is worth the mention
