Race for Life 2008

Thousands took part in the 2008 Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research, with many more turning out to cheer on the competitors.

More than 2,500 women took part in the 2008 Race for Life at Shrewsbury's West Mid showground on Sunday, 13 July. The event was organised in aid of the Cancer Research charity and many of those taking part had lost family, friends or colleagues to the disease.

There were many reasons for taking part

While most competitors wore pink T-shirts, others ran the 3.5 mile race in fancy dress. Many of those taking part wrote messages, dedicating the run to loved ones who had died from Cancer. Some were celebrating recovery from the disease, or had another positive message, like Michelle Newcombe, who had lost eight and a half stone to take part.

Competitors ranged dramatically in age and ability, with the focus firmly on taking part. However, it was also a race and student nurse Laura Grey from Shrewsbury was the first to cross the finishing line, several minutes ahead of the rest of the field.

Laura, a member of Shropshire Shufflers, ran the race in memory of her grandparents: "I lost three of my grandparents to cancer within a year... That year was really tough... let's just hope one day there is a cure."
