The sun was shining, the ducks were quacking and the children were having fun. Which is all you need really isn't it? Let me explain... Stephanie Brett lives at Dean Corner near Broseley. She's setting up a scheme called Wyldwoods there for children to come and learn about nature and wildlife and get out in the sunshine to play. It's a really beautiful place and Steph is keen to share it. On the way to plant the trees A tree planting day was exactly right for that location and for what she was aiming to achieve. She invited three local schools to come and help out. They jumped at the chance and by the time I arrived on site Steph was getting the squad organised, splitting the children into groups of three and giving them gloves and spades... and some expert tuition in how to plant a tree. Each group had a teacher or assistant in charge, then, trees and spades in hand, they marched off in search of the holes that Steph had prepared. After some hard digging, checking the trees were straight and putting a little plastic spiral round them to ward off any bark nibbling predators they were off to the next hole. Hard work! I wandered around to meet children in various groups and find out how they were doing. Everyone planted at least two treesbefore they went over to the orchard... and planted some more fruit trees! Steph was really thrilled at how the children had taken to her scheme and brought out some drinks and cakes (kindly donated by the local baker). The children had really enjoyed themselves and learned a lot in the process. As well as finding out about the types of trees that grow in England they discovered how trees can help the environment.听 Steph is keen to keep up the contact with the schools locally and invited them back in the future to see how the trees had grown. Planting a try may be one way to help deal with climate change, but there are plenty of other ways you can get involved, or help so if you want to find out about how to "go green", have a look at this section of the Directgov website for more information and suggestions The 成人快手 is not responsible for the content of external websites last updated: 03/04/2008 at 15:54 SEE ALSOYou are in: Shropshire > Community > Community Features > Apple and Oak at Wyldwoods |
