If you were to wander through Lydbury North you might be surprised to find a number of neat square holes dug in the gardens... a barrow full of sieved soil and several people with buckets and intent expressions wandering from place to place. An alien invasion perhaps? Or some strange new turf removing bug? No, indeed. The archaeologists are in town. A find from the Big Dig Mike and Teri Greene from the Lydbury Field Group - community archaeology - have a new scheme. They want to find out more about the origins of the village, where the boundaries were and what treasures might be buried just under the surface. They'd really like to discover some Anglo Saxon artefacts although at the moment they are still trawling through some quite exciting 17th century pottery pieces. The scheme is called The Big Dig and the group has permission to dig in gardens all around the village. They decided to start in half term week so local children could get involved and learn more about the history of their area. Progress is always slow and careful on a dig and some of the youngsters hopes of finding and Anglo-Saxon warrior buried in full regalia buried just under a local lawn may have been dashed but they we still finding interesting pieces of metal and glass from way back when. The young archaeologists have carefully opened trenches in three gardens so far, soil sieved, finds have been monitored and numerous cups of tea drunk. Later in the year the group will be holding an exhibition of the finds... and who knows? Maybe that warrior will make an appearance after all! last updated: 14/02/2008 at 15:25 SEE ALSOYou are in: Shropshire > Community > Community Features > The Big Dig |
