I have seen Honesty boxes in some places on Lewis, usually small shops out in the sticks, and I've wished I could do that in my shop too, because I'm out in the sticks myself, and I'm sure that 99.9% of my Visitors would do just that, but there's no controlling for the 0.01%, and a days takings is too much to leave to chance ... I leave my car unlocked always in front of my house, with all sorts in there, but would never do so in Stornoway ... Also, when I had a lorryload of logs delivered, I really *wanted* to just leave them there, by the side of my shop, but perhaps because I'm a 'town-girl' by birth, and some things never change really, I carried them all over to the shed behind my fences, and stacked them all in there instead ... What sort of person would steal from an Honesty box ...? someone who just wanted the money, I suppose ... :-) Not everyone sees their life in the same way as we do ours, I suppose ... :-) Shame we always must cater for the lowest Common Denominator though, rather than the highest ...

Either I am going loopy, or my blog has disappeared.. It was published this morning, about the over 50's taking vitamin tablets for vitality, and now it has gone. Have you seen it anywhere? I know, it's the Easter Egg Hunt, only now its the Easter Blog Hunt. Please come back, or was it an eggceptionally rude blog, cracking cheep jokes, etc. Oh my gosh, I'm lost for words.

There's a hare etching here in Anorak Towers (that's an etching OF a hare not a...oh you know what I mean!) which came from a gallery in South Ronaldsay. It was unpriced, so the blank cheque for it was left in the honesty box with a note saying "Please phone me and let me know how much it was..."

Thank you Soaplady and Flying Cat for sharing your experiences. I think your stories reflect how trusting and honest people are on islands, but as also mentioned, you will always get the odd one percent who have no conscience. However, when you think about the logistics of commiting a crime on a small island, a quick get away car would be of no use, as you cannot escape unless the ferry allows you to do so, and there at the other end waiting to cuff you are the feds. mmmmmm

Ho, Squidgy, where is the honesty box for sailors at Arinagour and what is it for? Mooring fee at a guess! Cripes, I've blown it, twice! Just another reason to roll up this summer to write past wrongs. Honesty is the best policy otherwise you may find your mooring chain rusted away for lack of maintainence. I humbly suggest that the sign on the box is bigger or better placed for 2008 - maybe I'm not the only unconscious absconder. Here endeth the confession.

Hullo Squidgy, great to read your blog about honesty. I never knew such a place existed where you could leave your car unlocked and money in a "honesty box". I teach at a large school in Liverpool and the children have been researching Coll, and I must confess the island has made a huge impression on them. Perhaps you could write more about your life on your Notes from a Small Island on your website. I have enjoyed what I have seen and read and would really like to know more about Coll. It's a great insight for someone who has never visited the island. What a great concept Island Blogging is!
