I'm back!
Posted: Saturday, 03 March 2007 |
Well, we did have a good couple of days. The first exciting thing to happen was the power went off on Wednesday night. Just as they were settling down to watch some telly. So that meant I got more attention instead - and quite right too!
Thursday we travelled up to Mallaig via Fort William. We kept stopping so I could get out and stretch my legs. When we got to Mallaig the B&B was very comfortable -I loved stretching out on the bed. They kept throwing me off but I never gave up!
I was a very well behaved boy so they have decided they can take me to more away days and nights in the future. I didn't bark at the sound of other guests or anything. I did cause some amusement when I decided to sleep under the bunk beds that were also in their room. There was hardly enough room for me but I just managed to squeeze in. During the night I did manage to creep up onto their bed and steal all the covers from her. Didn't take them from my Dad though (he needs extra warmth at his age).
Friday morning I had a great run along the silver sands of Morar. It was great fun. I kept dashing backwards and forwards, swam in the sea trying to reach seagulls and generally enjoyed myself. I met a couple of friends who also had a run with me but then we had to go our separate ways. I must tell Paddy and Fingal all about it next time I see them - I am sure they could persuade their humans to take them there too. I don't know how it would be for my dear friend Tilly - she is a bit vertically challenged and I think her wee paws would sink into the sand. Her mum and dad would have to keep digging her out.
We came back across the Corran narrows on the ferry - nothing for a well travelled dog like me. Then home after a visit to Tesco - looks like they got some tasty treats for me too!
Today (Saturday) I have had a bit of an adventure. My dad let me out whilst he was chopping some sticks for the fire. Now when I say chopping, that is stretching the truth somewhat. He cuts them up on his circular saw - no muscle development there then! Anyway, whilst he was busy I decided to have a little stroll to myself, see who was about, what was happening. There was a visitor on the island doing some work on the plinths that are to be put up for the Luing Trust so I tagged along with him for a while. Then I saw Dad in his car and tried to follow him - but he didn't see me, so I had to follow the post bus for a while. Next thing I know it is a couple of hours later and I am enjoying the view from Bardrishaig and talking to my new mate Rusty. His Mum was lovely and brought me back down to the shop where my Mum was about to get her paper - all worked out like clockwork. I then decided to race Mum back home by running as fast as I could in front of the car. Stopped off at Paddy and Fingal's - they have a rabbit in their garden which looks delicious to me but I got a row from my Mum for going near it - sorry rabbit.
Spent the rest of the afternoon with my paws up, having a snooze. Glad I am not a cat - just think what they must miss out on!

Baa-d days
Posted: Sunday, 11 March 2007 |
Well, after my adventure last Saturday I have had a quieter week. Sunday didn't do much, just rooted round my favourite haunts; the shore, the quarry, the village.
On Monday I am ashamed to say I was a very baa-d boy. Yes, folks, they got the better of my - I ran after the sheep. Now you all think it is because that's what dogs do, but I understand what they are saying - and I wasn't taking cheek like that off a load of balls of wool with legs. However, I got a severe row from my Mum and now I am being kept on the lead when any of them are about - which only makes them laugh at me all the more. I really don't know what got into me - it was like a white mist descending on me and before I knew it I was running. Am now going to adopt the 'I can't see you' attitude whenever they are around.
Tuesday I was walked to and from the shop on the lead which I really minded because I like to explore as I go along the island. She doesn't understand that a dog has needs as well. I suppose it was because of the incident yesterday. I don't know how she is going to trust me again - I will just have to prove what a good boy I can be.
Wednesday was great - I got to go with Dad to work because she was in Oban for the day. It was great, I got to stay in the workshop with him and watch what he was doing. In fact I think I could probably repair decks on boats by myself now but he doesn't seem to want to trust me with the drill. Doesn't he know that I am nearly 21 when converting from dog to human years. I should be nearly out of my apprenticeship by now. Anyway, we had a grand time me and Dad without any silly females to upset the balance. When we got back home we went out for a walk and I took my frisbee with me. Now I have to tell you I am rather good on the old frisbee - I put my front paws into it and scoot along the ground. I managed to go from the old ruin behind our house right along to where the land starts going uphill. I even aquaplaned through a variety of puddles. The poor humans really do seem to think it is amusing to watch. I then took the frisbee down to the sea to slide into the water. Then the unspeakable happened, a blooming big wave came and took it out to sea. I tried to swim out and get it but then an even bigger wave rolled me over and I had to run back to the shore. I was really sorry to see my favourite yellow frisbee disappear. Don't know what I am going to play with now...
Thursday, Dad didn't go over to Balvicar today so I was able to supervise goings on in his shed. It is great when he is here because I get loads more walks. However, I did get a great present from my Mum. When we went to the shop she bought me a new frisbee - to replace my loss of yesterday. This one is green and already has plenty of teeth marks in it. Tested it for scoot-ability and it works like a dream. Will try not to lose it in the sea this time!
Friday and Saturday have been wet days which really depress me. The humans just don't seem to want to go out an play as much. Saturday morning I thought it would be good to have a game of hide and seek with Dad. He took me out just after 7:00 in the morning as usual and when we were nearly back home I decided to hide. He spent a bit of time looking for me and the next thing I know he is driving his car through the village. Told me later he had been as far as the shop and back. I was just hiding nearby and leapt out when he got home. Wanted to carry on playing but he made me go back into the house - spoilsport.
Will hopefully have a bit more to tell you all next week as I am going to be at work with Dad all week. Mum is going away again. I have to travel down to Glasgow with them in the car tomorrow as Uncle Brian is also away - what is it with these people? Don't they know how great it is to live here. Can't understand the need to keep going away. Anyway, I will try to be a good boy this week and find some entertaining adventures.

SOS for Paddy and Fingal
Posted: Monday, 26 March 2007 |
Boys, have to make this short - just using the computer before they get back. I need your help. They have sussed us out. They have CHANGED THE DOOR HANDLE on the BACK DOOR. My only means of escape has now been scuppered by the placing of a round door knob.
Boys, what can we do - do you think it is worth starting a tunnel in your garden, and I'll start one in mine and see if we can meet in the middle. Will we have to get a STAG appraisal done before we start to dig though.....?!?
I'm depending on you boys to help me hatch an escape plan.

I'm revolting
Posted: Tuesday, 27 March 2007 |
No, I don't mean that I have suddenly become less adorable overnight. I mean, I am protesting. I am protesting against these so called caring humans who think they can keep me in when I need to be out, free, running about. So my current plan of action is the sit down protest. Yes, that's right. Just when they get back to the back gate and think I am dutifully beside them, they turn around and I am sitting down about 200 yards away. I don't make any fuss, this is a peaceful protest. I just sit down and refuse to move another inch until they come back and make a fuss of me. So far it has earned me several 'biccies', a few runs after my favourite burst buoy, and one row from my Dad who was hurrying out to do his Fred Astaire bit last night and didn't seem amused at my antics.
Overall I have been a very good boy over the last two weeks. She was away again so it was great - me and Dad lying on the couch in the evenings, watching the telly - none of your soaps on when she is away. We watch TV that men and their dogs appreciate - documentaries, building houses and Dad's favourite programme featuring a bloke called Norm Abraham who makes things out of wood. Dad just looks wistfully at the size of Norm's workshop and all his gear - I have tried to tell him that size isn't important but he doesn't believe me. The best bit of each evening is when I get my treat - my piggies ear. They are great; very crunchy and tasty. Always give me a bit of a thirst though. It is the best bit of the day, give me a piggies ear and I am a very happy boy.
As it was rainy whilst she was away we (me and Dad) decided to get on with a bit of renovation in the house. We built a lovely fireplace in the living room. I supervised of course - let him think he knew what he was doing, you know the kind of thing.
We had lots of walks together but the weather was too bad to go out on the boat. I got to stay at Uncle Brian's for the night when Dad went down to Glasgow to collect her - no presents brought back for me again! I really must try to train her better.
It was great weather over the last weekend and mum took me for a couple of good walks on Saturday and Sunday - poor old thing, I didn't think her legs were going to keep going all the way back home. We went down to the pond where Dad keeps the boat and I jumped into the water after rocks she was throwing for me. That woke Dad up on the boat (he was supposed to be working) and he rowed back ashore to us. I did actually swim out to him and then followed the dinghy back in. I love swimming, but I love shaking all the water off me onto them even better! Just get your timing right and your away - water expelled off your coat and she is drookit - pure genius.
I must get them to take some more photos of me to put on my blog - I really am very photogenic you know.
Well that's all for now. Will go for a kip now and dream of my next piggies ear. It's a dog's life you know......
