The Midwife

Easter is soon upon us and in Shapinsay Easter has grabbed a few people by the horns and in some quarters the Chicken population is expanding.

Hushed voices and secret phone calls are gripping the island.

A consignment of eggs from doon sooth all fertilised and ready for the hatching were secretly smuggled onto the island. They were lovingly nurtured and handled carefully as to not spoil their chances of hatching. Once in the incubator they were cared for and watched over by grown men all eager to see if their brood was better than the next.

Midnight phonecalls to the midwife were heard.

"Does the cheaping from inside the egg mean that the chick is in distress"
"Should I assist the poor thing into the world"

The Midwife held his ground and assured the proud parent that there was nothing to worry about and all would be fine.

Proud parents watching over the peedie balls of fluff in awe of the miracle.

These tiny fluffy miracles would soon be grown into fat plump birds. And the cycle goes on again

But what did come first

The Chicken

or the Egg?

Perhaps I need to phone the Midwife

Naturally colored eggs, Barebraes?

Lovely chick ...! Next time, you could tell the anxious parents that if they hear cheeping, they should cheep back, so as to let their precious cargo know there is something outside, and that its safe to come out ...! That's the way muscovies do it ... :-) whether or not most people can manage a life-like 'cheep' is another matter ...!

I remember, with son number one, he got a bit too big for his boots, so I said - OK clever clogs answer this one - what came first, the chicken or the egg? he replied - that's easy, the egg. 'And who laid the egg' I asked? he haughtily replied 'a HEN of course.'

Don't make it a cheep Easter OTOWH! We had a bloke in the lab who needed eggs and one hatched by mistake. The first thing the wee chick saw was - Arne! So Arne was the mite's "mum" and it followed him everywhere. I don't remember the end to this SAGA but have a feeling it was unhappy. And that is otterly everything I have to say on the subject.

"Never let an acronym beat you FC" I said to myself. Oh To Own a White Hen appeared eminently reasonable...until I realised it was barebraes' avatar...SAGA - Such A Gas Arne! (Not Ruth's Arne surely?)
