Turbine or not Turbine

As some of you might know Shapinsay are as we speak polling all residnts over the age of 16 to find out if there is a need for a Community Owned Turbine.
I myself are part of the Development Trust that are proposing the turbine and its benefits and dissadvantages to the island.
Last night we had a meeting where people could air their views and ask questions of the Experts. There were mixed feelings as expected and now we have to search our souls for the correct thing to do.
If you had to choose between a turbine in your view or the thought of the revenue that would be generated which would have a direct benefit on your island then I can guess that some people would struggle with a decision.
I have made my decision and now will have to wait until Wednesday to hear everyone else's. The Turbine is proposed to be sited quite near to our house and also near other properties. For us the decision is slightly more difficult but never the less we have to make a decision.
What would you do ?

We have quite a few turbines going up in our region(languedoc rousillion" and "provence-alpes-cotes d'azur" Ok they are not very pretty i admit but i would rather have a turbine in the field in front of the house than a nuclear power station any day!(anyway it will be cheaper for the locals) What stil amazes me is the fact that i don't know anybody who agrees with nuclear power stations but heaven forbid a turbine to put up within their view. Those so against to both options maybe they should by a generator which could be operated by peddling a bike? ok grump for the day over!!

I'd probably vote *for* it ... Because its owned by the community ... and because there's only one of them ... I actually think they're fairly beautiful - I've visited the small (3) farm at Crosbost, and find them strangely ... <whats the word, when something draws you to it> compelling ...? enigmatic ...? enticing ...?

The brain sees it once then forgets about it. It is clean energy that consumes co2 as i understand (AL may wish to enlightenen on that point) Any alternative should be given its due.Still awaiting pics of the new roof. Regards.

Over here in Ontario, we have an area that has over a dozen turbines - not in a wind farm, but spread over a whole township. I love driving through the area! They are just so pretty and it feels so good to know that it's an environmental source of electricity. I've been through the area in the summer, with the windows down, and I've stopped to take pictures of the things - I really can't hear much except a quiet sort of thrumming. Now.... I don't live in the area so I can't speak to day to day exposure, but I have been paying attention to the news (because they're considering a second area full of the turbines) and I haven't heard of any outstanding negative comments from the residents of the area. Thanks Karen I will take a look at the website you suggest. I guess it all comes down to personal preferences. I do think that they look very graceful.

If it benefits the local community, and there are no health hazards associated with Wind Turbines, then it's a good idea to have a Wind Turbine thing, however I'm not sure that I could live near one, just my humble opinion....

I am for the turbines in deserted areas, far from human habitation, where the chopped up and knocked about birds drop and rot sight unseen. I wonder whether there is not enough wind for a few near the digs in Balmoral, or for a score or more in London (along Parliament, in front of Downing Street - lots of wind there-, or Buckingham etc.). The Chelsea, Kensington and Hampstead areas could use some windmills, artistically painted perhaps. Until the Queen, and El Presidente in Crawford, have one first to adorn their shacks, I would not dream of having one: lese majeste, and all that good stuff.

So long as you can put up with the constant whining, booming and whooshing in the night, I think it's a worthwhile benefit to the community. How is Mr B, by the way?

Why's nobody saying what the outcome of the islanders' vote is yet? How long does it take VAO to count up to several dozen? Will this comment appear today (Tues 26 Feb) tomorrow next week or never?

Gosh. It was a winner! I hope this doesn't affect you adversely, barebraes, seeing as howe it's going to be near-ish-by...but then there's planning and other stuff...give it another 10 years or so...

I am glad that a majority of the island said YES. At least I would rather have that than a company or private invester erecting one for the lining of their own pockets

Birthday treat from kids was fab, thanks. No excuse for getting lost now. Hope the wind hasn't troubled you too much - has been blowy here for 24 hours. Spoke to Lois in the week - she was woken by the earthquake, being only 10 miles away! She said it was more than spooky!

Good for Shapinsay! Over here the subject of the placement of wind turbines is still fairly contentious, but I did note a person who claimed to live right by one also claimed to be distrubed by the sound than by the distant motorway - we live about 4 km from the major motorway in Sweden and you always hear the sound of the traffic unless the wind is blowing all the exhaust gases in one's direction. What I like about wind farms is watching how the different rotors make patterns as they all rotate at slightly different rates - very soothing for a troubled mind.
