Dwangs, Noggings and All that Stuff

We have now finished the floors and are busy trying to get the walls and ceilings up in the new Bedroom, Mr B hooked up the first floor loop to the heated circuit and we are in the process of raising the temperature slowly so as not to crack the floor screed.

The first wall went up on Friday and the ceiling plaster board was also raised. All day there was a hive of activity from Mr B as I was at work in the afternoon I returned to help him place the plasterboard on the ceiling with the aid of a long piece of wood and various contraptions. The bedroom ceiling is now finished and we have most of the shower room and part of the bathroom covered.

There were lots of references to Mr B needing a Dwang, Nogging or other unusual terms. I just thought that he was trying out his Orcadian, but on investigation found out they are technical terms for small supports between the plasterboard where there are no joists.

We cut the stairs that we had aquired in half so to modify them to reach the upper decks and tried this out for size. We worked from 9am -10pm on Friday and again on Sunday, Saturday was an easier day when we finished at 7pm.

These are the results

Today we are going to have a lie in and do some more later. Hopefully the walls either side of the stairs, but we shall see.

Hope you all had a strenous weekend tooo

Wow! Just reading about your hard work makes me feel tired. I am *really* impressed by this. Hope Mr B got his dwang. If it was a particularly small one, would it be a dwarf dwang?

Jill from EK

you have had a busy weekend.i had a bad one! was singing on saturday night, then went to the hills with a friend and her son just after dropping the son at his girls home i decided to stay in the back seat of the car-we had a crash had i moved into the passanger vseat in the front i would be in a bad way but i just got bumps and bruises, friend broken coller bone, leg but nothing serious

carol from the usual place

Yes Mr B has a very small dwarf dwang Jill. Carol thats awful glad to hear that you are all ok

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Good to hear you are alive. Did you go voting Sunday? Another few weeks and then, NZ here comes Carol!! # Barebraes: house looks awfully solid. How do you keep it so neat while all that work is going on around? Congratulations. I am impressed.

mjc from NM,USA

thanks barebraes i'm ok but feeling very angry against other driver, they were completley on our side of the road, which made my friend swerve to miss them and the rats didn't even stop

carol from with sore ankle, after crash

are those to be your stairs(pc 4) i hope they're not for your sake!! they look like the ones we had in the old house-very steep and pure hell whilst going downstairs

carol from with sore ankle, after crash

I think Mr&Mrs B are well able for a flight of stairs - look what all else they've done!! Wasn't Dwang Eddy an American singer? France seems quite a dangerous place to live...glad you're sort of ok Carol.

Flying Cat from doing a godwin

woah...very impressive, thats a big change since the last pics you sent me... you two must have been working really hard. cant wait to see you both again soon, and i must be mad as im even missing that big softie hooch slobbering on me! hehe xx.

the son from sunny southend

Mjc, we intend to stay here for a long time and dont want to have to do all this again so it has to be sturdy, as for neat well Mr B runs a tidy ship, and I wield a mean broom

Barebraes from Shapinsay

to all who haven't tried renovating an old house it is very tiring,we done the last one on our own and the house i'm in now is a split new house-that we built just the two of us,althought now i have done more than hubby did as the por man fell ill in the middle of building it,i've learnt to tile floors etc-not always perfect but at least i tried and sometimes feel quite chuffed when i say-i did that!

carol from with sore ankle, after crash

to mjc:: thanks. no i didn't go voting-i haven't french nationality and sarko hasn't won yet!!

carol from with sore ankle, after crash

Well Carol If you ever get to Shapinsay and you want a job we could to with a tiler. You have good reason to feel chuffed theres a lot who wouldn't even attempt to tile floors or build a house.

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Yup, Damadcoo and myself with my oldest lass helped Muness to flit. Strenious? Very. But the result was good, the new hoose looks cosy, Mac the dog has much more space, and Muness still has some magnolia, so he is content. Mr and Mrs B, your hoose looks like its goin to be great.

Ruthodanort from Unst

Thankyou Ruthodanort. We will need a lot of paint soon so any spare contributions will be welcome :)

Barebraes from Shapinsay

we found out the best way to overcome the painting and decorating problems-we built a wooden house!!! wood, wood and evn more wood!! well insulated cut our energy bills by over 60%

carol from on the mend

Well done Mr & Mrs B what a job. Dwang Eddy now there was a tunesmith if ever i heard one. Be careful with Carol she's on her way via every hospital to Vatersay, so she should be here by 2008, at her present rate.

Crofterbill from in the Vatersay bunker

It would be good to see a few more noggins between the studs, if the timber is still green, it helps to reduce movement, once you have Gyrocked(Plasterboad) you will find out , from joint cracking. Better to stabilize at this point and remember that as you bring your internal temerature up things start to stablise. From an old hand at the game.

roy from Sofala Oz

Thanks for the advice there Roy. We are going to be placing many more dwangs/noggins on the walls as we have been told that cracks appear, but it is appreciated and any other advice will be greatly received, we are learning as we go along but can ill afford to get it too wrong as we intend to stay here for a long while

Barebraes from Shapinsay

be very careful, crofterbill!! i'm still witing for a e-mail from you giving me goid directions to get to vatersay!!

carol from the usual place

The Fank Fringe on Vatersay! It's a great way of extending the season....

Flying Cat from Gingernuts R Us

I have looked at your pipe run in an anlarged imagade and cannot see how it has been secured on its run. the rule is,( pressure/run) if it is not secured at 4ft centers you will end up with system hammering. I am working on 20psi the rule does not change. secure the pipes before you clad.

roy from Sofala Oz

The pipe are clipped with fully covered pipe clips to the walls and the insulation covers the pipe clips and the pipes. the floor circuit is run from a modulated system devised by Mr B, Hes been a plumber for over 20 years and I have confidence in him.

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Enlighten me: where is Sofala Oz? # Say, Barebraes, the hulk is not one of the original Watergate plumbers, now on the lam, is he? A pal of Gordon Liddy, lying low in Shapinsay?! # By the way, I ordered some more stuff from Odinstone for my daughter down south: to help her study for her exams. This time I included chutney - protects against the flu and against the evil eye, i was given to understand! (kidding). Comfort/care packages from NM to uni. may not make it through custom. I may have to send her an Orkney hamper ...

mjc from NM,USA

The chutney is great and Mr B had a taster of a proto type chutney that had chillies in it ... Fiery little beast it was too
