Here is a Cat item to balance up the scales so that FC and other felines don't feel that the whole world is being taken over by the D.O.G. (As if that would happen)
Our cats have found that if they hide in the Pampas Grass in the garden they can lie in wait for their prey, or hide from the maurauding rooster when he is on the rampage. The Chickens are a canny bunch and know that when the front door is open there is easy access to the cat food in the lobby so they get in a great huddle outside the door and chase off the cats.
In the middle of the Pampas Grass the cats have made a small flat area which is hidden from the outside world and there they sit waiting.
Last night I went out to gather in the washing and was set about by a pair of playful cats who took turns in rushing from the Pampas in a crablike fashion, rolling over and then quickly running back into the grass. I guess that they have a safe haven from the chickens and the wind.

Lovely pics of cat(s) in the Shapinsay jungle. Do the hens really go inside the house to get the cat food? Amazing! I used to have a small acer tree that was like a circular tent - perfect for cats to hide inside and leap out on unsuspecting birdies. How do the cats get on with gorgeous Hooch?

Cats kill me! The other day I watched in astonishment as my black kitty "Brodgar" slithered her fat self into a tiny drain-pipe thingy in the byre!! I couldn't believe that A) she could fit and B) she would WANT to do such a thing! Cats are characters!

But could they teach the world to sing in perfect harmonee...well obviously the cats could, for, as all the world knows, cats are VERY musical. Dawgs, on the other paw...ptui! Like Leonard Cohen without the poetry. Me and m'Marmalade Chum like a good lurk and leap in and around our pampas grass. But as for hens pinching our dinners! I think not!!!!

Yes the hens do come inside the house much to Hooch and the cats dislike. Hooch has learnt to tolerate the cats as when we got him from the RSPCA he was a cat chaser. His first day in his new home consisted of him lifting up the sofa with me on it to try to get to the cats whilst Mr B had to hang onto him by his lead and collar, He now sleeps with the cats in his bed. I guess we were lucky.

Nic, you don't really expect hens to start laying in the pampas grass with those fiendish characters in the neighborhood. Your environment is fast going downhill (appropriate metaphor, quite possibly), Barebraes. What's Hooch doing about it? If vitamins don't help, he may well need a testosterone shot. What a great turnaround for Hooch. You must have trained him very well - what a nice story (apart from the intruder hens, that is - maybe Hooch and cats united against a common enemy). Could you send a pic showing them all together (ie the dog and cats)? That would be lovely!

Jill there is an archive blog entitled Oh No Not another DOG blog in January that shows in Pic 8 the Hooch asleep on his bed with the cats, I think that Hooch was probably taught to chase cats by his previous owner but now he is very gentle

Dog training is easier than cat training, Perhaps Coco is smarter than we take him/her for!!

On an IQ scale of 1-10 (ten being Labrador genius), I would rank Coco as ....(Gee, I have forgotten the number. Must have contracted the TWS virus. How about helping, TWS: what would you rank Coco as?).

With reference to your previous posting, Barebraes: my siesta was disturbed by a thought of Hooch as sculpture at the ferry landing in Shapinsay. Is there a sculptor on the islands, a hitherto hidden Michelangelo, who could do justice to your mastodon, Hooch the Pacifist? If so, we could start thinking of fundraising strategies. The sculpture could be unveiled at next year's Fank, then transported under Fred Blog's supervision (perhaps in his small van, gratis) to the dock at Shapinsay. What say you all?

The Briard would probably be so blinded by the hair over its eyes that he would miss Hooch by a mile. (Briards are nice looking dogs, but high maintenance I should think).
