Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Genesis, Led Zeppelin Zoso - these are the bands I grew up with in my impressionable teen years ... At the true-believers location of Frodo's, Warrows Wine bar in Nottinghams Hockley district, I donned my leather jacket, and drank pints of cloudy scrumpy, occasionally indulging in the local speciality of a 'Bent Trent' - pernod and coke, so called because it almost matched the colour of our River Trent ...! I was frequently to be found in lines of similar people, doing the dance where you put your thumbs in your jeans loops, and shake your top half rhythmically up and down and to each side, to the beat of the music ... not easy after 2 pints of scrumpy and a few Bent Trents, I can tell you ... :-)

PLEASE,PLEASE-STOP ; Yor making me feel my age!!
carol --- from over here-
yep, got all them albums, what puzzles me tho', is how much teenage son and cohorts like them? Aren't they supposed to recoil in horror when 'aged parents' put their music on?
jas from under Mia's paw, listening to Dio
jas:-yes its great isn't it--our son was brought up listening to pink floyd, bowie stones ,deep purple, black sabbath etc(he loves jethro tull as well) he first saw pink floyd in montpellier at the ripe old age of 12yrs-it was a great concert three or four generations turned up,he then saw them again in 1994-still in montpellier, the year after we saw the stones(still in montpellier)he will be 32 in september and still loves the same music as me-last concert we went to together was in november in the french town of beziers where we went to see marianne faithfull-he thinks she's great(so do i) i could never have went to a concert with my mother but a lot of my friends sons and to a lesser extent daughters listen to the same music
carol from up the khyber
That's funny, Anorak Towers babybipeds also prefered the music their aged parents grew up to (well, the younger ap anyway...not sure how keen they are on Lonnie Donnigan)...what was wrong with their own stuff? No don't answer that, its all a blur.
Flying Cat from climbing the stairway to heaven
i agree FC-mine of course hubby being who he was, banished the likes of lonnie donnigan, acker bilk, billy fury, adam faith, frank ifield rosemary clooney(daughter loves her nephew, though)can anyone remember one of my favourite songs by petula clark-"sailor"--sailor,stop your roaming, sailor,on the sea, sailor, when the time turnscome home safe to me-i used to love that-right where's my zimmer?--
carol from my old mans a dustman
I cant believe that's 30 years - you've made me feel even older!! It goes to show that good music never dies - how much of the stuff around today will still be played in 30 years time - I love the oldies - still got a pile of vinyls and a turntable to play them on Rock on!!
Wild Freckle from Mull - thinking about raining!
Interesting comments! Looking back it was a real privelige growning up in the 70s. The list of good bands and singers is almost endless. I suppose it represented a maturing of the explosion of creativity in the 60s, and it went all the way through hard rock, heavy metal right through punk, new wave and NWOBHM in the early 80s. Carried on via New Romanticism and stadium rock and then re-ivented itself as britpop in the 90s. Since then, with a few exceptions its been pants. Compare and contrast todays "pop" music however with the burgeoning traditional music scene. Which itself has a lot of crossover elements in it. Ah for the days of carrying the latest Led Zep album to school, religiously watching TOTP and the Whistle Test, "fingers in the belt loops" dancing to Tiger Feet and actually looking forward to the Top 20 rundown. Stuff it, I'm going to strap on my Strat and pretend I'm Clapton...... :-) (or should that be \m/ \m/ ?) JW
MM from head down, playing air guitar...
what has music today got to offer??looking at groups like the stones, deep purple, led zep still going strong(oops how can i forget the searchers-after their brilliant concert in auckland)its not quite the same thing! ah 'fore i forget man has got us tickets for james blunt he's playing in nimes this summer-now i am getting old when i go to "sedate" concerts!!
carol from cum on feel the noize
James Blunt??? Your musical tastes are nothing if not eclectic Carol...
Flying Cat from feeling slightly nauseous
Thin Lizzy are classic. Same time period, I think, but different musical genre - anyone for Abba?
Carol from IBHQ
Abba? Brilliant band. I speak as a metalhead... The ability to write brilliant tunes and to deliver them with such style and flair - its what easy going pop music should be about. And talking of easy going, Al Stewarts "Year of the Cat" esp the Old Grey Whistle Test preformance version is almost unbeatable. You can find it on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QM7LR46zrQU Or just do a search for Al Stewart Year of the Cat on YouTube. Sublime! JW
MM from Mull
Oooooooo yes! Some of their rhymes were awfully good!
Flying Cat from last night in Glas-gow
not really,carol@ibhq-i liked some of their stuff--FC didn't like blunt's first cd,but the one that was released last autumn has some good stuff(ouch!)
carol from S.O.S
Abba? Never heard of it. [right!]. Gimme the Beach Boys any time.
mjc from NM,USA
Abba are great - the songs are so easy to sing along to but are very cleverly written - my first record was goodbye yellow brick road by elton and my first big record (LP) was tea for the tillerman by Cat Stevens - I have such bizarre taste - and I'm afraid I'm a closet Meatloaf fan too! is there any hope for me??
Wild Freckle from humming a tune whilst typing!
As long as you keep your meatloaf in the fridge WF you'll be fine! MM thank you so much for reminding me about Year of The Cat, I had forgotten how good Al Stewart was/is? Well I hope he's is not was...
Flying Cat from I think this song is about me don't I don't I
WF:- "you took the words right out of my mouth---"
carol from over here
Teenagers still puzzle me, Shirley Bassey was belting out in junior staff's room the other night...and he's pinched my Meatloaf collection!
jas from in a Gillan mood
Thought it was the meatloaf you took Carol.
mjc from NM,USA
FC - I pretty certain that Al Stewart still "is" - do you remember Colin Blunstone - "I dont believe in miracles" - can anyone remember the guy who died about a year ago - similar genre!
Wild Freckle from Mull
mjc:words from one of my favourite "meatloaf" records!!
carol from dreich sunday
And what about the Bay City Rollers???? I grew up on Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, Bay City Rollers, then Abba...Saturday Night Fever....BeeGees.....Gloria Gaynor.....and the new romantics......Prince Charming anyone?? BUT....Bat Out of Hell is still the bestest album ever in the whole world!!
tindra from batting out of hell
tindra: the bee gees first sang long before the BCR'S etc etc! they were evn better in these days long before saturday night fever!
carol ---an oldie but goodie from saved by the bell
I went to a musical extravaganza on Saturday with my parents - Abba, Saturday Night Fever, Motown... they were all there and it was fantastic. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. You can't beat 'em.
Carol from IBHQ
no one will ever guess what i heard on the car radio this afternoon coming back from nimes---"swampsnake" by the great, great great alex harvey band! i thought i was hearing things-alex harvey on a local french radio station-must go and kiss the dj! catherine my friend now knows i'm completly mad, cause i pulled up so i can sing to my hearts content! ah nice afternoon!
carol from i'll be there
Tindra - I didnt want to mention the BCR's, David Cassidy, Osmonds - they were a vital part of my growing up! I had the most enormous poster of David Cassidy on my bedroom wall that my dad was forever moaning about! (and - confession time - I still have two David Essex vinyl LP's - it was more him that the music) - I gave birth to Bat out of Hell - will my daughter suffer?? glad you made it home - thanks for fantastic night - must do it again!
Wild Freckle from blustery Mull!
Alex Harvey eh , Carol? Brilliant. His version of Delilah is an all time classic. Yawn, guess what another hit from the 70s.... Go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vSLZs3kq2M SAHB and Delilah on OGWT. MM
MM from Mull
WOW!!!! thank you, mile merci's MM-i clicked onto the above site-SAHB were really brilliant-last night man with magic fingertips managed to install new record player to existing sterio so i can listen to loads and loads of ("good"") records:his comments just now at this?--bof!---men extremly hard to please at times!
carol from feeling really aged
Oh Carol! Send him up here at once. We've got a brand new (20 year-old) turntable which never has fitted to any existing stereos (like it was intended to)...let those magiic fingertips do the walking! Giving birth to a bat sounds like medical history, why have we not been informed of this innovation before?
Flying Cat from caring and sharing
Turntables? I've got a pristine Rega Planar 3 (with the glass platter) havent used it for ages but now I think I might just dust it down. Right next question, whats it to be: Zep, Floyd, Purple, UFO, Sabs, SAHB even!, BadCo, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Free, Cream, Rainbow, Foreigner, the list is endless. Right, do a roll-call of the 2000's in 30 years time and what will it look like? Instantly forgetable I would think.... \m/ MM
MM from Mull
and have you seen, they're releasing a new Creedence Clearwater Revival cd, swamprock is brilliant for long journeys!
jas from under Mia's paw, listening to Dio
Swamprock: never heard of the term, jas. Explanation? # FC, can't you buy an adapter?
mjc from NM,USA
Bad Moon Rising...*sob*...(that wasn't me. I'm just a young kool kit. It was someone MUCH OLDER)
Flying Cat from adios
MM and what about the doobies' steely dan awb(average white band for those too young to rember)!
carol from here,there and everywhere
Doobies? Excellent band (named after a slang word for reefer of course) Or was it a slang term for sex? Hey its the 70s - anything goes. Steely Dan. Even more excellent - the ultimate in thinking mans music without getting too prog rock ish. Reeling in the Years has got a great guitar line running through it. Love it. AWB? Dundee's answer to Motown? Crivvens, Help ma Boab, Maw, Eh'll hae a peh....!! Going back to the Doobies, ZZ Top (another seriously good band) took their name from two types of , ahem, "cigarette paper" one called ZigZag the other "Top". Hey, this sure beats working....
MM from Lost in a purple haze...
just been listening to small faces(above record) genial!! thanks for i nfo above!
carol from ogdons nutgone flake
swamprock - listen to Bad Moon Rising, Who'll Stop the Rain, Born on the Bayou - the only explanation you need, mjc
jas from belting along with Creedence
Oh MM - what have you started?? great blog with us all reliving our younger days - fantastic - I often have Steely Dan (as opposed to Steeleye Span - all around my hat) in the car Haitian Divorce, Ricky dont lose that number - him indoors is a bit of a rocker - wouldnt you know! what about Michael McDonald - Ya mo be there - great tune!
Wild Freckle from Reeling in the years!!
Oh no Wild Freckle, it has to be Leonard Cohen in the car.
Flying Cat from Take This Waltz
Ultimate music for the car: Highway Star by Deep Purple, Ace of Spades by Motorhead, Radar love by Golden Earring, Boys are Back in Town by Thin Lizzy, Wheels of Steel by Saxon, Rock Bottom by UFO, Kill the King by Rainbow ... and ... well there arent anymore, cos by this point you've run up so many penalty points, your licence is toast...... :-)
MM from Mull
King's College Choir? .... anybody?!!!
mjc from NM,USA
Rutter? I mean, you don't want to jive (all over the speed limit) while driving. Remember all those CATVs.
mjc from NM,USA
Golden earring - now you're talking "i've been driving all night my hands wet on the wheel" - great driving song driving on Mull's road is bad enough without head banging too - will definately finish up in a pot hole or ditch - confession time - I am a big big Simple Minds fan - I know they are pop rock but I think for the girlies, apart from the music, Jim Kerr was an added incentive - Dont you forget about me!! loving this blog MM!
Wild Freckle from head banging in the car!
whilst driving i listen to whatever my hand touches first--i usually take about a dozen cd's into the car with me and just see how the mood goes-it may be mozart, hayden, pink floyd deep purple joe satriani, queen(freddy mercury period) bowie-my list is endless though i must admit driving along rural france, the roof down and me singing along with hayden or mozart is well-GREAT!! only this year i've only had the roof down twice--its p***g down every day for the past month!
carol from where its still bloody raining!
Wild Freckle, Simple Minds were good - there were actually a lot of good Scottish acts around at that time. Although I am a died in the wool 70s sort of rocker, there was a lot of good 80s stuff as well. I actually like some of the New Romantic music - a lot of it was very melodic and catchy - what good "pop" music should be. Hey, a metalhead admitting he likes Duran Duran... is it possible? Is it legal? TIme to get back out onto the rocks, methinks....
MM from Mull
Well....if we're moving into the 80's then mustn't forget U2 and Vienna - great driving track for night-time. Trivia question - which song kept Vienna from the No1 spot?? Was speaking to a friend the other day who had "weekended" in Nice......rained all the time - I came back from Mull with a better tan - and you don't get that very often!!
Tindra from stationary in sussex
driving to the choirs AGM. last night was listening to "Brian May" live at the brixton academy---brilliant as was his "Back to the light" cd-the last one i bought of B May was "another world" only listened to it twice---hated it
carol from at last its sunny
tindra: driving along cd-player full blast, top down U2 beautiful day and only to be with you,or even paulo nutini's "jenny don't be hasty" is brilliant
carol from looking for sun cream
Tindra - wasnt it "shudda your face" no offence! - this morning I was driving to work to Nutbush city limits - and came home to The Jam Town Called Malice - good to hear them again - had a good downpour hear - couple more days will do then some nice weather please!
Wild Freckle from more freckles than usual!
Tindra, can't remember the name of the 'song' but was it not one of those silly ones along the line of Rene&Renata, I remember thinking it very unfair as Vienna is a classic and brilliant track, almost up there with Man on the Silver Mountain.
jas from in a Gillan mood
jas, "Man on the Silver Mountain" ? NOW thats what I call music - classic Dio/Blackmore "castles, kings, wizards, elfs" sort of stuff. Mind you, occasionally, these guys get the lyrics a bit wrong. Such as the Black Sabbath (with Dio) song, "lonely is the word" , that has the lines: "It's a long way to nowhere, And I'm leaving very soon On the way we pass so close To the back side of the moon" "Backside of the moon?" Eh? Must be an Americanism..... :-)
MM from Tobermory
You folks are all maniacs. You must have been quite impossible in your "youth"!!
mjc from NM,USA
MJC: have you not realised to contribute to ib,you must be slighty nuts???
carol from in from the sun
"Backside of the moon?" Eh? Must be an Americanism..... :-) MM from Tobermory" # Who are you, MM, to cast the first stone?!! (grumble, grumble). What kind of stone would you cast, MM? # Eh, Jas, if I were to get a Creedence Water CD, which one might you recommend?
mjc from NM,USA
mjc, I pride myself on being impossible now, never mind in my youth! MM, I do approve of your tastes, I recently acquired Dio's Magica album which is intriguing. Have you listened to some of Blackmore's recent albums, his band these days is Blackmore's Night and 'Ghost of a Rose' is well up my favourites list!
jas from under Mia's paw, listening to Dio
Wild Freckle - you get the prize - it was "shut upa your face" - what a travesty! Glad you've got the rains - we had high winds last night - had to get up to close the windows. Hoping to get away this weekend in the motorhome so bound to pour down. Good luck with the whale watch. Ardnamurchan lighthouse is stunning.
tindra from windy sussex
MM- wasnt Richie Blackmore in Rainbow and I may be making this up - with Screaming Lord Sutch??? - must dig out my old vinyls - I've got the first Queen album in vinyl - saving that for my pension!!
Wild Freckle from quietly reminiscing (?spelling)
WF: i've only heard of the ritchie blackmore of deep purple-last night i listened to tmmy james and thes shandelles "crimson and clover" LP sniff sniff---lets see if this blog can make a hundred,OK?
carol from baskling in the sun(at last)
up to 56!! think we can make 100 easy - MM - was blackmore in Rainbow?? hubby thinks so too! - i'e dug out the doobie brothers - where's those flares??
Wild Freckle from sun, wind, showers, you name it, we've got it!
It's been a while since I last heard God Save the Queen, and even longer since I was forced in high school to sing it (which I subsequently did, lustily, off key). Thenceforth I was told to lip synch, as do so many monks without good voice. Now, if you wish to hear a rather good version of America the Beautiful, all you have to do is ask. I would take even an "ah-hem" as sufficient encouragement...
mjc from NM,USA
Oh dear, another of my comments has gone awol. MM, the Dio/Blackmore combo is one of my favourites. Dio on his own is good as well, especially Magica. Blackmore's recent stuff is well worth acquiring as well - look for Ghost of a Rose. MJC - I would say you need to get Platinum - the ultimate collection for the best examples of CCR, or else get John Fogarty's solo album Long Road 成人快手
jas from under Mia's paw, listening to Dio
sorry jas but fill me up please!! i've been "exiled""since 1976 and (hang my head in shame)i don't know of Dio--explain please!
carol from feeling ignorant
Thanks Jas, I think I'll get the Fogerty album first.
mjc from NM,USA
Carol (France), to my mind Ronnie James Dio was the best vocalist with Rainbow, and his own stuff is excellent, Magica is a combination of song and story but his other albums are as good, he's still around but there has been quite a change in his voice (no great surprise there as he must just about qualify for senior citizen discount).
jas from under Mia's paw
thanks jas;but i'm still no further forward
carol from over here
carol, try this link (ignore the video footage, listen to the song), www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkysjcs5vFU, Dio was with Rainbow, Black Sabbath and has his own band too
jas from under Mia's paw
thanks jas,but when i tried the link the first time it said"video not found" and the second time it said a fault was in the url listed;
