In the 50s most of the popular music had been made by American groups but in the 60s the Beatles arrived and took the world by storm. This was great for other British groups because the world now had their eye on the UK. Bands like the Rolling Stones, The Who, The Animals and The Kinks all became hugely successful.
Some of the big names in Scottish music at the time:
Donovan.
Born in Glasgow, Donovan really hit the big time in 1965 when he appeared on a British music programme called Ready Steady Go. His music originally had a folk music feel to it but throughout the sixties it changed to a more psychedelic sound (like a lot of the music in the sixties). He was very successful in both the UK and America.
Her real name was Marie McDonald and in 1964 she had a huge hit with her song Shout. She was only 15 at the time! Lulu went on to jointly win the Eurovision Song Contest, have 16 UK top 40 hits, top the US pop charts and sing a James Bond theme (The Man With The Golden Gun)!
Started off in the early sixties as a trio before becoming a two piece in 1966. They were very successful in Scotland. Their live shows were legendary- sometimes the crowd sang louder than them and sometimes the Corries just stopped singing and let the crowd sing alone! They appeared on telly loads and wrote the unofficial Scottish Anthem Flower of Scotland.
