The 60s were a golden age for football in Scotland. Long before today鈥檚 massive deals for foreign strikers, Scottish teams were making an impact in Europe using home-grown talent.
1967 saw Scotland beat England 3-2 at Wembley. This was an important victory for Scotland because the previous year England had beaten West Germany in the World Cup final. Now that Scotland had beaten the world champions then that surely meant they were the best team in the world?! That鈥檚 certainly how many fans saw it!

1967 also saw Celtic sweep the board winning the Scottish League, Scottish Cup, Glasgow Cup and League Cup. Most importantly they won the European Cup in a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in Lisbon. They were the first-ever British team to achieve such a triumph and the European Cup team were (and still are) fondly known as the Lisbon Lions.
In the same year Rangers reached the final of the Cup Winners Cup, losing out in extra time with a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

There were also big successes outwith football. Jim Clark was a Formula 1 racing car driver who is still regarded as one of the best drivers of all time. In his Formula 1 career he won 25 races. He is perhaps best remembered because he won races in several different kinds of cars. This proved that it was his sheer skill, and not just a fast car, which made him a winner. Jim Clark sadly died in 1968 during a race in Germany.

In 1969 Sir Jackie Stewart won the Formula One World Championship. It was to be the first of three titles for the racing driver from Dumbarton. Altogether he achieved 27 Grand Prix wins, which would take a further 20 years to be equalled.
