Allergens - Hay Fever

Updated: 28 March 2024

Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen, typically when it comes into contact with your mouth, nose, eyes, and throat. Pollen is a fine powder from plants.

Your hay fever signs and symptoms may occur year-round or may start or worsen at a particular time of year (seasonal).

Hay fever triggers include:

• Tree pollen, which is common in early spring

• Grass pollen, which is common in late spring and summer

• Ragweed pollen, which is common in fall

• Dust mites and cockroach droppings, which are present year-round

• Dander from pets, which can be bothersome year-round but might cause worse symptoms in winter, when houses are closed up

• Spores from indoor and outdoor fungi and moulds, which can be both seasonal and year-round

What you can do to try and prevent allergic reactions:

• Keeping workplaces clean and as free from dust as possible

• Regular vacuuming and dusting take place

• Make sure surfaces are clean using good quality anti-bacterial cleaning wipes

• Avoid bringing fresh flowers into the office

• Good ventilation such as using extractor fans or air conditioning

• Keep windows closed early morning and late afternoon when the pollen count is at its highest
