Allergens - Drugs

Updated: 28 March 2024

Just like any other allergies, a drug allergy occurs when your body’s immune system becomes sensitized to a harmless substance in medicines and mistakes it as a foreign invader. Some medicines are more likely to cause an allergic reaction than others.

Some of the most common allergy-prone medications are penicillin, painkillers, and antibiotics.

How you can prevent allergic reactions:

• Painkillers must not be available in First Aid Kits

• First aid at work does not include giving tablets or medicines to treat illness. The only exception to this is where aspirin is used when giving first aid to a casualty with a suspected heart attack, in accordance with currently accepted first-aid practice
