High Frame Rate TV

Improving the realism in sports coverage

Published: 1 January 2008

This project explores how motion blur can be removed from high definition and ultra high definition images

Project from 2008 - present

What we're doing

As resolution increases, to maintain the resolution of moving images, the frame rate also needs to increase.

As the image shows, this is even advantageous at HDTV display resolution, let alone for UHDTV.

To sharpen motion, you can also shorten the camera shutter, but at conventional frame rates this leads to judder.

A frame rate of 100 fps enables the eye to fuse motion, even with a short shutter opening and is also high enough to avoid visible flicker.
